Respite care

Hi, I'm trying to find some respite care for my husband who suffers from MSA, but can't believe how difficult it is, feels like I'm inventing the wheel for the first time. My son wants to take me away on holiday for a week at the end of May before I burn out. However all care homes I've contacted which say they do respite care, are unable to book it in advance. I can see it from their side as they're a business, but it means I can't be sure I'll get a suitable place for him. Also some only do a minimum of 2 weeks or even a month, making it more expensive than I need. The other option is of course live-in care. I'm still exploring this, so far have found one organisation who would charge £300 + per day, again very expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions, I live in the South West of England near Tiverton.Thank you.

Hi

Another area try would be hospices as they do respite care.

Contact social services as well as they may have a database.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Paul, hospices were suggested to us yesterday at a zoom support group meeting. But it now looks like we may not need to go down that route as my sister and very kind neighbours are offering to do the care - both nurses so he'll be in good hands! Thanks for replying though.

Thats great news.

Caring is about caring for both of you!

Hi, I attended the MSATRUST meeting in Preston, Lancashire last week. We discussed a £2.5k grant for respite care. Katie Rigg, MSATRUST nurse was at the meeting and may be able to advise you if you contact the MSATRUST office. Enjoy your holiday xx

My husband was given a package via Social Care Direct and City of Edinburgh Council. There is an excellent respite centre which serves the whole of Scotland and he stayed there for 10 days, the Council paid for his stay. Perhaps there is something similar in your County or neighbouring counties. We drove my husband there but I know there is another charity that collects people from home. I hope you find somewhere and get your break.
