Have not posted for a while as feel I do not want to discourage too much. John is really struggling as now he cannot speak at all. However, still eating for 2 which is good.
We recently went to stay at Mitchelland Farm (Lake District Disabled Holidays) near Bowness. Fabulous spacious log cabins. No changes in elevation, wide doorways, large open plan living, wet room, profile bed, shower chair and hoist available. Lovely views. John s mobility is also non existent, but I managed with him for a week by myself. Highly recommended.
Ps. I read with interest the wonderful river cruise adventures, am interested to hear how other female carers cope. As a VERY fit 57, but only 52kg carer, I find doing the above with my husband is about all I can contemplate.
Much love. A

Will have a look at those log cabins, sound very interesting. We have had a couple of short breaks at a house in Heysham with views straight across Morecambe bay and access straight onto the promenade which reaches from Heysham all the way through Morecambe up to Heat Bank. A very long flat wheelchair push - which is one of my holiday choices!! The owner is disabled so the house and a flat a few doors away are fully accessible.
I think lots of us haven't posted recently as it is difficult not to be a bit discouraging as the nature of the disease means things slip slowly but e are still here and still fighting so well done for writing something helpful. Geoff is still speaking but with varying success and he has been supplied with a grid pad ready for when he can't be understood! Will take a bit of practice though! Eating/swallowing is his problem so going down the PEG route.
Hello Amanda, please don't be discouraged from posting because of John's condition, the great thing about this site is that we are all carers or patients going on the same journey but along different paths. This dreaded condition presents itself in so many different ways at different times but hopefully we can be here to support one another when needed.
I have much feeling for your situation in that I find it hard enough with Jax who is light and I am very (for now!) fit. We have had many battles with holiday companies who think it's not possible for us to travel on their itinerary but in the end we manage by a combination of determination and a degree of brute force! I feel for you and am so pleased you managed to get a holiday in the Lakes.
Did a cruise last year with P.& O from Southampton along the Iberian coast an back. There were a number of wheelchair users and I spoke to them. They said it was very good and thye were well looked after
Ian, hello. Thanks for your reply. I think you said in an earlier post that you have an all terrain chair. Thinking of getting one. Any recommendations?
Hello Amanda. I have just found this post buried in other posts - I am so sorry that I have not responded before.
We have a trekinetic all terrain wheelchair for Jackie. We had been very active before Jax's dx and we wanted to keep as active as we could. Added to this was that we live in a rural village with poor pavements and also spend much time in Devon in a mall village with no pavements!
If you look Trekinetic up you will see they are slightly larger and hence heavier than a traditional chair but very comfortable to sit in I am told. The large chunky wheels cope with anything - providing I can push there! The chair is not inexpensive - we often joke that we sold Jackie's small BMW and bought the wheelchair! Despite this we think the chair is fantastic, in fact we are just off later today on a tour across Belgium and Germany with a trip on the Moselle.
Once you have had a chance to look at their web site, if you want to have any further information then just send a reply or DM me. Incidentally on the Trekinetic web site there is a 'film' of Jackie and her wheelchair in Myanmar in 2015.
Take care, sorry again for not seeing this earlier, Ian
