Hi all hope you had a nice Christmas and wishing you all a happy new year. I’m hoping for some advice and tips regarding indigestion. I started on aspirin in May and Hydro in September and over the past few months have been suffering with indigestion every time I eat. It doesn’t seem to matter what I eat or the amount. Does anyone else suffer from this? I’m due to see my mnp doctor on the 17 jan so will be telling her, but thought I’d ask on here to get any advice first. Thanks ☺️

Aspirin can be linked to indigestion; when I was given it I was also given a prescription for lansoprazole to counter any problems (I did get indigestion but not that badly so I didn’t use it).
(Jumping on the back of this discussion I’m on clopidpgrel these days and recently having indigestion again - does anyone know if clopidogrel is the likely cause and if so if lanzoprazole a solution? If not I’ll ask the haematologist next week!)
GI side effects are common with hydroxyurea, including gastritis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Aspirin is also a GI irritant and can cause GI bleeds. The GI adverse effects were one of the reasons i could not tolerate hydroxyurea.
This is definitely something to discuss with your MPN Specialist. It sounds like you are intolerant of either HU, aspirin, or both.
Thank you for the reply I appreciate you taking the time to give me some advice. I’ll definitely discuss it with them when I’m next at the hospital 😊
Altho no longer on hydrox (just Jakafi and aspirin) I suffer these too and will be going for abdominal scan tomorrow to see what else might be causing the “obstruction” 🤞🏼🤞🏼
While I was on HU, I had a terrible worsening of my chronic acid reflux AKA gastroesophageal reflux disease [AKA indigestion] despite my usual good control via omeprazole 20 mg twice-daily, along with oral ulcers, along with new issues of suddenly losing my balance.
I have been much better served by Besremi.
God bless and good luck.
Happy New Years all!
It is aspirin may cause indigestion.
Omeprazole once a day 30 minutes before meal will solve the problem or you could ask doc to change the blood thinner med to Clopidrogel.
Happy new year
I have a history of indigestion and requested enteric coated aspirin. I’ve had no problems with indigestion.
I too started to experience indigestion issues after starting HU in May. My GP recommended Lansoprazole (one daily) which does the job very effectively and also helps protect the stomach from unwanted aspirin effects. However, this drug (and all similar ones in this range - Proton Pump Inhibitors) can cause Vit B12 absorption problems so it’s important to keep an eye on this.
I have ET, take 1000 mg HU daily, and have acid reflux that predates the ET. My GP has me on 40 mg omnepresol. I also have a lot of sinus drainage which makes the indigestion worse. I've found that digestive enzymes really help. My go to pills are:
Before dinner, Super Enzymes by Now Foods
I've started taking these regularly, rather than just when I have a flare-up. Hopefully this will allow me to drop back down to 20 mg Omnepresol. By the way, the founder of Now Foods was a neighbor in the 1970s. Knowing his level of commitment, knowledge and integrity, and the fact that his son now runs the business, I fully trust the brand.
For the indigestion from sinus, Original Papaya Enzyme by American Health - You chew these. I've tried several brands and these are the most palatable. I sometimes chew a few after dinner as a substitute for dessert.
I make sure I take the coated aspirin with food, for the indigestion I find Gaviscon works best. I also take Lansoprazole in a morning and sometimes at night.
