Covid-19

Hi, haven’t been on here for a while, too much going on, mum diagnosed with dementia, son was very ill with covid in hospital, so been an eventful few months. And now I have covid! So just wondered if anyone with ET Jak2+ has had covid and how it affected you. I’m currently on day 6, headaches, aches and pains, sinuses completely gone, but sore throat and cough stopped. Taste and smell went on day 4, which is really weird, trying to eat something spicy and not tasting it at all. Oh and really tired, which is the norm with my ET anyway.

Hi Grumpyfairy, , wow you have had a rotten time of it and now you are under the cosh , I know Covid is highly infectious but on top of that you must of been run down with all you've been coping with and your ET too.

I hope you make a speedy and full recovery, I'm hoping you have been vaccinated which should help. You may know that the loss of taste can linger on a good time and your right its weird eating curry and not tasting it but your still sweating cobs. I lost mine after my SCT and at periods since. The last being Dec20 til May 20 which I suspect may have been mild Covid as felt ok otherwise.

Being flippant I was going to start by saying you can't have Covid because surely it's gone away judging by the fact that masks, hand gel , distancing etc in shops and elsewhere is optional or non existent but your experience tells us different and serves as a reminder to us all.

Get well very soon !

Chris

Hi Chris thank you for your reply. Yes it’s certainly not going away. I’m in wales, I’ve had both vaccines, still wear masks, my husband luckily hasn’t got it, yet. Oh don’t say that about the taste!, if my symptoms stay as they are and don’t progress, that is the worse one. Friends and family are dropping cakes and ice cream off at my doorstep and although I’m extremely grateful, Im not eating them as no point! Thank you 😊

Losing ones taste (or smell therefore taste) , , is awful and very under estimated in terms of its impact upon ones quality of life. I hated it each time because as you say you reach a point where you think what's the point of having a special meal or a treat because nothing registers on the old taste buds. I know I've always been an eat to live guy but I want to be able to enjoy the meals, snacks or drinks that I do have. I do hope you get yours back as your other symptoms ease but be prepared for it to be gradual. And let me know if you have any Liquorice Allsorts going spare ta 😃

I really sympathise with you as my mother in law is end of life and now has dementia. I think that I had covid before we knew it was covid back in Jan 2020 and with no vaccinations. I was sick for about a month with a really scary week where I struggled to breath, that must have been the dip in oxygen that they talk about. I felt it was the worst flu ever but then my partner caught it more mildly but had the lack of sense of smell and taste. It was only around March that we realised we had had it. I went through that with ET and no vaccines. I would also add that I must have had long covid as it took months for my chest not to hurt when walking, I was fuzzy headed and fatigued. The chest is all better but the other two symptoms persist a bit.

Hi Jenny, thank you for your reply. Yes dementia is a terrible thing to have and see. Gosh yes must of been very scary to have got it in the early days before we knew more about it. The fuzzy head feeling like your in a goldfish bowl is not nice at all, up to now my chest isn’t too bad. I hope your long covid symptoms end soon. 🙏🏻

Sorry to hear the COVID got you. The dysgeusia would be terrible! I sure hope you recover from that part ASAP. And you recover from the rest ASAP as well.

I was exposed last Saturday by a thoughtless niece who had been exposed and did not tell us. She thought it did not matter since she had no symptoms. Now she and her 6 month old baby have it and exposed all the rest of us. As of yesterday's SARs PCR I seemed to have dodged the bullet. Will get one more test on Friday to see if I am free of the COVID. Yeah for vaccines and a third dose! Unfortunately the vaccine did not fully protect my son, who was exposed previously and did contract it. He is doing OK, but taking a while to fully recover.

Dealing with a parent with dementia is very difficult. My Mother has vascular dementia with Alzheimer's as well. She is quite miserable. It is very sad to see a once bright mind so diminished. She is not in Assisted Living, but really struggles every day to cope. I certainly understand how stressful it is.

I hope you are taking very good care of yourself. We can't provide care to others unless we take care of ourselves.

Wishing you all the best.

I have ET and had covid in December last year (pre-vaccine). The main difficulties were fever headache and tiredness. It wasn’t a good few weeks but managed to recover well. Just don’t plan to do anything or exert yourself at all. Rest, rest, rest and try to eat even though you won’t be hungry. All the best with your recovery!
