Does everyone have morphology when CBC is done . I have blood done every 2 months and see hemo every 4 . The morphology was strange … showing anthracites, burr cells , large platelets .ovalocytes,Hypersegmented neutrophils . I have ET. My doc is out of the country for a few weeks and one of the other doctors reviewed the results after I wrote to to then . He didn’t want to change anything… wanted my regular doctor to see results when he returned from his trip …. Thanks

blood morphology
I would ask whether these findings are indicative of some form of anemia, which is a known adverse effect associated with hydroxyurea, which I believe you are taking. While macrocytosis (enlarged RBCs) is expected with HU, I have not heard of megathrombocytes (large platelets) being associated.
Note that there would be additional testing needed to accurately assess what is going on. This is something to discuss directly with your MPN care team. Hopefully, you already are seeing a MPN Specialist.
It is up to you to determine whether you are comfortable waiting for your regular hematologist to return. While you can do some research on your own regarding these findings and whether they are consistent with some form of anemia (e.g., hemolytic, megaloblastic) or other issue, that will simply generate questions rather than answers. Suggest that it is the answers that you need.
Please do let us know what you learn and how you get on.
thank you Hunter. I will let you know what I find out. I know my hemo had ordered B12 and Folate for the next blood draw. He is a doc at the University of Iowa .
I have PV, and have a CBC every 4 weeks, as well as manual and auto differentials. The blood morphology is always a bit strange: metamyeloctes, elliptocytes, nucleated RBCs. My MPN spceialist has told me that this is to be expected with MPNs.
