Hi

I have recently been in hospital with acute diverticulitis I am home feeling much better but concerned as my platelets have gone from 350 to 550 I have been on a course of antibiotics for 7 days .

I have ET plus Jak2 medication 500 Hydroxycarbamide 75 aspirin I wonder if anyone else has any experience of this and I am thinking could the infection of affected the platelets or antibiotics.

Appreciate any advice .

Best wishes

Anytime I have experienced GI inflammation it was always accompanied by reactive thrombocytosis. This is a normal response by the body.

Similar to you though I have PV, was on Asprin and Hydroxy for many years. I was told I had diverticulitis when I had a colonoscopy, though it fortunately has not bothered me much.

I swapped from Asprin to Clopidogrel some time ago to save any possible side effects on my digestive system.

My platelets have hovered around the 5-600 level for most of the last ten years without any problems so I don't worry too much about a level of 550.

agree it’s most likely inflammation and stress of being in hospital causing raised platelets.

Good to keep record of how bloods are behaving over a period of time .

Hopefully when you next are tested they will have gone down.

Concentrate on getting well. Do you eat a diet that is helpful for not aggravating

Symptoms of diverticulitis ?

Also optibac probiotics for after antibiotics will help your gut and maybe things like kimchi , saukraut would be beneficial. ( start having small amounts if not used to them)

Hi Modbury

this is pretty normal - my platelets were down to 456 and shot up to the 600's when I was on antibiotics - I also have diverticulosis and have suffered from diverticulitis with a ruptured sigmoid abscess. Keep well we are here for you xx

yes any inflammation rises platelets. I got it recently from mosquito bites when travelling. My skin erupts so I know my platelets go up every time I have inflammation. 👌

I had an inverted herniated disc 3 years ago and was in so much pain I couldn’t walk for 9 days. My platelets shot up to over a million for the first time. I think whenever your body is under stress, it’s normal for platelets to increase.

Hope you’re feeling better.

I have literally just read online, yesterday, that antibiotics can increase platelets temporarily. Sorry, cant remember exactly where, to reference it- but hope that reassures you
