My operation was cancelled for a few reasonsand because of Polycythaemia . The Dr wanted to use Tranexamic Acid to reduce bleeding. Does any one know if this can be used with polycythaemia . Thankyou .

This is a question for a MPN Specialist to answer. You need a case-specific answer for your unique MPN profile. I expect it would also depend on what this surgery is and how much bleeding is anticipated.

When I had a major surgery (resection of brain tumor) I was given an injection of heparin to prevent clotting. They also checked my prothrombin times before the surgery to assess my bleeding risk. Since I have a history of lower von Willebrand Factors, the surgical team was also aware of the potential need to administer vWB factors in the event of a major bleeding event. My MPN Specialist was consulted as of the planning process for the surgery.

PV comes with an increased risk for clotting. If you also have thrombocytosis, there can be an increased risk of bleeding as well. Managing PV and major surgery is complicated. You need proper planning with a MPN Specialist involved to ensure an optimal outcome.

Wishing you all the best.
