Finally had the visit with the liver specialist at Chapel Hill. Good news is I can start taking Besremi again. Bad news is I have fatty liver disease and it was more extensive and serious than we had expected.
On a scale of 1-4 I rank the beginnings of a 3. 4 is cirrhosis of the liver. Good news is at this point it is somewhat reversible. Bad news is that will require me to lose 20 pounds and keep it off. I was in a funk all afternoon yesterday. So many people in my life are on drug or are alcoholics. They seem fine. My own blood and donuts are killing me. 🫤
I’ve woken up with a better attitude today and I’m grateful that things aren’t worse.
Speaking with the liver specialist- some things that surprised me: - Milk Thistle (meh… doesn’t hurt doesn’t help. Don’t waste your money.) Don’t take green tea supplements. (Drinking green tea is fine.) Don’t take Turmeric supplements. (Used on food is fine.) Ashwaghanda was also a big no no. Those of you who know me at all know I have always been a believer in supplements and I was taking everything but the green tea.
Another surprise to me was that she LOVES statins for cholesterol. I have tried so hard to avoid statins.
That’s all to report for now. Back on Besremi at 50mcgs next week. 👍

Sorry to hear about the results. Hang on in there. All will improve following doctors orders. I hate the thought of statins but am coming around to the idea too. Lots of people I know take them and they seem to do well. Good luck
Sorry to hear about the fatty liver issue. The good news is that there is something you can do about it. I also used to have some issues with fat deposits on the liver. I lost 60 pounds over the course of about 2 years. I did it by increased exercise and using the Lose It! app on my phone. Unfortunately, after the brain surgery and during COVID shutdowns, I gained 25 pounds back. I have started back up at the gym and just resumed using the app on my phone. My goal is to lose 1 pound per week until I reach target.
Happy to hear you can resume Besremi. Having another issue such as fatty liver disease is discouraging but it sounds like you have a plan! After developing AFIB in December I was in a total funk so I can relate. I felt very vulnerable and actually pissed:I have PV, now something else? Really???
I looked at my diet and decided to lose 5-10 pounds and increase leafy greens. I don't drink anymore (Besremi and afib and never was a big drinker) so I focused on reducing added sugar.
Happy to say that I've sharply removed sugar from my diet. I didn't eat a lot of sweets before, but I cut out everything except some brown sugar in my coffee, low sugar/high protein yogurts, 2 grams from OLI POPS each day, and once a week, a low sugar treat. I might also add local honey to my tea a few times week.
I did lose weight and have a flat belly. After a month or so, I didn't miss the sugar.
Sugar and flour and the worst culprits in our diet.
