A Moan

Quick Moan,I had a phone appointment booked back in May 2022, for today's date Monday 21st November at 10.30am for consultation with Guy's Hospital.

I sat patiently from 10am until 11.30am and no phone call. I then had to leave for work, it was then on that car journey at 12 that I received the call. An hour and a half late, no apologies af first.

Only apologised when I complained about the delay.

I managed to get out of the call, that my bloods are ok. But I did have various questions that I would of liked to ask.

Unfortunately my next appointment is May 2023, yet again by phone.

Surely a consultant knows when they are running behind, and in this day of mobile technology could just send a text alert to make us aware. They were lucky that I answered my phone, as I'm sure if I reported to Guy's Hospital an hour and a half late they would of turned me away.

Anyway moan over!

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year.

Mark

I had same problem never received my call as never notified it was happening . I was not home & received a letter telling me I missed it & another one telling me I had a phone appointment that came a month after it was due 🙈 Also a voicemail on my home phone from Professor Harrison that I had not been informed of .😣

Spent ages attempting to leave a message at Haemotology at Guys. It’s not the easiest contact system . However they now text.

Eventually got to speak to Professor Harrison on 1st Nov . My next phone consultation is March with her . It’s hard to get through . However she was very good re my treatment and altering doseage etc re interferon problems I was experiencing re migraines. Hope you get good advice Mark. Julia. 👍

Morning Just extremely frustrating as we put a period of time on hold to take these calls. As its extremely important regarding our health, then we sit and wait.

Just a text if delayed would be courteous.

yes I agree I told Claire Harrison that when she rang as I wasted a week trying to get a message passed on by Haemotology to explain I received no information to tell me she was ringing. & like you sit by phone waiting . I think they believe we are all sitting in rocking chairs waiting & don’t lead working busy lives. I now receive letters & texts but the phone calls never on time . Julia 👍

We well deserved moan! That really is just plain rude. There are admin staff who can reach out to patients when a doc is running really late. That is just basic courtesy.

I still do not get why there is so much reliance on telephone appointments. Tele-video appointments are so easy to do and provide a much better interaction between the doctor and patient. All of my providers offer tele-video appointments. They also all have a patient portal where I can review labs/reports and send a message. Noted that some respond faster than others.

Hope your next appointment goes better.

I certainly understand your frustration. Why post covid is everything still done by telephone consultation? 😤The only time I've had a F2F consultant appointment in the last 3 years are for the two I requested by email as I was feeling unwell.

In the 3 years, I've only seen a CNS once to show me how to administer the Peg injection!

Luckily, I recently had an annual health check at my surgery and the Peg has affected my thyroid and liver function. (My monthly blood form never requests a thyroid check, so it was lucky I was due my health check but I was aware of the liver issue from the previous blood test).

Even getting a CNS to reply to a left message for blood results can take days😬

I feel extremely unsupported and I can't be the only one

sorry to hear you’ve had problems. I too have had minor issues but consider myself to be extremely lucky to be under Guy’s. I hold them all in HIGH esteem my blood nurse is my link to life.

Hi Smudger,

That well sucks! So sorry to hear about that disappointing exchange. :-|

Similarly, SWMBO played telephone tag with her neurosurgeon's office, once they finally started allowing 'elective' procedures again post-pandemic [if it's really post yet...]

She had a spinal cord stimulator implanted in 2005 to control/disrupt the aberrant pain signals sent by her damaged nerves, and prevent them from reaching her brain, and in 3/2020, then battery finally stopped accepting recharging- long past its projected service life.

Then she had telephone/Duo/Zoom, or whatever app consultations scheduled on at least 4 to 6 different occasions, for each of which she received a last minute [or for some after the appointment should have started] telephone call, saying that the neurosurgeon had to cancel due to an emergency surgery.

She finally gets one last call scheduled, only to have the secretary/receptionist/whatever tell her the the surgeon isn't accepting worker's compensation cases any more, even though he is the one who performed the implantation almost 2 decades ago.

Also, I took off from work in 8/22, to drive her to her orthopedist's office, because her right knee, which was injured in a fall, was too painful to use in diving herself. We arrived literally 5 minute prior to the appointment's scheduled time, but when she tried to check in for the visit, we had to wait in a long line, which seemed maybe equal parts due the the secretarial staff's ineptness, and the slowness/unpreparedness of some of the patients, the upshot of which was by the time they got to her, it was 20 minutes past the visit's start time- so they told her they would not see her. It took until last week for her to finally get in to see the surgeon again, and then she was told that they were no longer going to accept worker's comp either...

It's hard being a patient these days, and the providers seem to only value their time, and not your/ours...

I have to say that, perhaps because of my history of having been a patient as an adult for such a long time before going to PA school in my 30's- I'm very careful never to let that even seem to be the case- I'm here for the patients, and not the other way 'round.

Best,

PA
