I’ve been on hydroxy for over a year now and I’m just wondering if my imagination is working overtime..
Has anyone noticed that hair dye doesn’t last and the colour fades away? Also, if I wear perfume,it seems to evaporate in minutes.. Just wondered if hydroxycarbamide has anything to do with it?
Thank you for reading

Others on the forum have reported similar issues with changes to skin and hair. For some, this may just be part of the reaction to HU. it is likely not just your imagination. These sorts of issues are typically not researched. There may be more knowledge in the body of experience on the fourm than may exist in formal studies. This would not be a likely topic of funded research. Not much money to be made in figuring this one out. \
I expect the only way you would know for sure it to discontinue the hydroxy and try something else. Not sure that is viable or desirable in your situation. You would have to work that out with your treatment team.
My hair all fell out so no issues with dye. I am a guy, so perfumes are not an issue either. Hopefully others will weigh in with their experiences to give you a better perspective.
Hello Cokopops, I colour my hair and take Hydroxyurea I have found that the colour changes and definitely fades, especially if you go in the sun. Also the texture of my hair seems to have changed and my hair is thinner. I can only relate it to the hydroxyurea, because it wasnt like this before. I am very careful with how I treat my hair and the products I use. I have been taking hydroxyurea for 2 years now. Perfume is still the same.
If this is changing your hair that much, it must be doing other things to the body too. Check which nutrient deficiencies HU causes and then supplement to replenish ! this is true of all chemical meds but really for natural substances used medicinaly. I take everything possible to counteract the damage Anagrelide is doing to my body for the past 5 years and with that, am keeping as healthy as possible. 🙂
doctors usually never learn anything about nutrients and chemical balance in the body. This is a huge problem in the western medical system. Also, there are thousands of meds on the market, not even the pharmacists can give us proper info! Better to research yourself or go to a functional doctor to check and make sure to also have yourself tested for deficiencies. I am constantly low on B3, B6, D (should be ideally at 60-80, higher with those who have serious illnesses) iron and zinc, DHEA, CoQ10. Aspirin also causes deficiencies. Also, when it’s buffered, it protects the stomach from ulcers, but it does cause small intestinal problems. I take aspirin 3x a week and in the other days, ginkgo 3x 60mg per day.
Hi, I think my body odour itself has changed, n can’t seem to get deodorant that lasts. Hair has thinned n gotten drier as has my skin. Menopause has contributed to dry skin/hair I think
I ve been on HU for 15 years. No particular issues , hair on head seems fine ( I won’t go into details here about the rest but could make you fall off your chair laughing) perfume also fine.
I haven’t dyed my hair for years ( I m 68) and it’s a wonderful shade of Snow White. Useful if my husbands looking for me in a crowd.
I do have to be very careful in the sun and wear a large hat like Paddington bear. Couple of issues with tiny basal cell carcinomas but hey! In the grand scheme of things that’s nothing, this drug is keeping me going and I’m jolly thankful for that. Hands together for the clever folk who invent all this stuff.
I found that too,I always end up with numerous mozzies bites when I go abroad on holiday but this year (1st on Hydroxy) I had none!!!Yaaayyy!!!!!Every cloud eh!!??
I’ve been on Hydurea 3 months and my hair is definitely thinner, I don’t colour it, having decided a few years ago that grey is the new blonde. I do notice however that I have an increased sense of smell and notice things that I might not have been aware of. Perfume that I previously loved no longer appeals as it smells different.
On the pus side, since taking HU my psoriasis has all but disappeared after >30 years!
