I am 77 female have PV taking hydroxy 10 pills a week. My hemotologist and MPN specialist agree I can have red wine. Hunter, what kind do you drink? I am assuming just one glass a day. Has anyone ever tried vodka? Inquiring minds want to know!!

I tend towards wines that are low in acidity (easier on the stomach) and low tannic (personal preference). I nice Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon generally speaking. I keep my alcohol consumption reasonable since the Besremi can affect liver/kidney function as can hydroxyurea. I usually reserve wine for when I am with friends, otherwise it goes to waste. The occasional top shelf vodka or whiskey are quite nice. They at least keep better once opened.

I do think we need to be cautious with alcohol when managing a MPN, particularly when we are using cytoreduction. However, life is to be embraced and lived to its fullest. I had the opportunity to sit at the chef's table whilst on this cruise. Great food and wine pairing. Quite a lot of fun!

Wishing you all the best and carpe diem!

Hi, this might help, this is the advice on our website: Can I drink alcohol? While it is safe to drink alcohol in moderation while taking hydroxycarbamide, we recommend you do not exceed the recommended weekly limits of 14 units of alcohol per week for men and women. Alcohol can cause dehydration, and it is important to avoid becoming dehydrated if you have an MPN. Please ask your nurse or doctor if you require more information regarding alcohol consumption.

To be honest ( and you re going to hate me!!!) I haven’t drunk any alcohol since I was diagnosed 14 years ago. Am I a paragon of virtue sitting in my ivory tower? Absolutely not.

I take 14 x 500 mgs of HU a week and I just feel a whole lot better without wine or indeed anything else - I loved gin and tonic. ( I too was a red wine drinker)

Bendicks Bittermints and green and blacks organic chocolate are now my tipple of choice. ( no I m not a porker either 😂😂) . Not sure if you can get them in the states ! I agree with Maz - stick to the recommended intake.

If I drink alcohol ( I sometimes try a sip from my husbands glass) it makes me feel decidedly odd and nauseous.

Give abstinence a try. Lots of other lovely stuff out there to drink. Who knows? You might in the end not miss it……😊😊😊Louise

I am 73. When I started on HU 8 years ago, I drank 2-3 drinks in the evening. I am on INF now and do 1-2 drinks mostly cabernet sauvignon. I have never had a problem.

Thank you my friends for your info on drinking alcohol. I have explained to my friends that Hydroxy is toxic to liver and kidneys, so I am already putting these organs in jeopardy. I imbibe only occasionally, and so happy to feel well, I don't miss it!

I drink about 30 units red wine a week including a three day break. So effectively three quarters of a bottle per drinking day. I space over 2 to 3 hours and combined with lots of food and water.

I avoid the big Australian reds (15% alc) and prefer Cote Rotie, Burgundy, Bordeaux and lower alcohol Barolos and Brunellos (quite hard to find).

In every other respect I lead an exceptionally healthy life style and, as Hunter says, life’s too short not to enjoy it.

I know 14 units is the limit but I figure that the risk curve increases exponentially so going from 14 to 30 not that big a deal. Going from 30 to say 60 is a very significant pro rata increase in risk.

Also some people have a much better ability to detoxify alcohol. I’m hoping I’m one of them. I have regular live function tests and ALT and Gamma all perfect.

Finally all the doctor I know drink vastly more than me!

Hello, I was told by my doc to have a nice red wine glass a day. Now, we travel a lot and for example, we have just been 4 weeks in France and 3 in France and Germany. Vine yards everywhere! So we had wine nearly every day, with the food. When we are at home we tend not to drink before a working day, unless a birthday or so.If we go out for a meal, I prefer an Irish coffee instead of sweet desserts. So, yes, wine but not strong spirits.
