Is a glass of red wine a day helpful or harmful for Polycythemia Vera? I’ve read that resveratrol might affect the JAK2 mutated cells.
Red wine: Is a glass of red wine a day helpful or... - MPN Voice
Red wine
I have never seen anything on this one way or another regarding PV. There is some general support for a glass of red wine per day, though not all accept that. I would suggest that if you enjoy it as a part of your daily diet - go for it! Providing it is in moderation, a nice glass of wine wan certainly improve your day. I favor a low-acid low-tanicity red. A nice Cabernet Sauvignon is a favorite.
The only thing I would note as a caution is to pay attention to the potential for drug interactions and the potential for hepatotoxicity. Some of the meds we take are hard on the liver. I expect moderate consumption of wine or other alcoholic beverages is fine. I did ask my doc this question and he was fine with it.
All the best.
Hi Dan, I think you need to ask your MPN specialist & internist (PCP). Because I’m on Hydroxyurea my MPN doc said best to avoid alcohol but that all I know. Katie
Hi Katie, I was told the same and on Hydroxy.
Never been told this ! I have a glass of wine most days with dinner plus some social drinking (but not to excess as I hate hangovers) and hydroxycarbamide controls my platelets well (ET CALR). I have always been asymptomatic.
Hi I’ve asked the professor at the Christies Manchester previously, I’ve got ET/PV he said it’s ok in moderation the odd glass or beer I have two or three nights I have a glass then I have two or three nights just fresh lemon and hot water
Hi Dan 73. I was also told it is no problem in moderation.
Somewhere a long time ago I read that red wine can reduce platelets. Not sure if that is true but I certainly enjoy a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon at the weekend. Good excuse😂
Hi Dan,
I have PV and enjoy a glass of red wine most nights, and in medical terms (not mine) I binge drink at my Wednesday Club while enjoying a game of darts, ( surely walking up and down the oche is classed as exercise ).
My advice is to drink water and stay hydrated while consuming any amount of alcohol.
You are the expert on you and you will know when your having a bad day so those days can be alcohol free.
My PV may be life limiting but it isn’t life threatening and I intend to enjoy what I can when I can.
Good luck and have fun,
Ourlife
I’m raising my glass to you Dan.
Curious - different specialists seem to take different views. When first given my PV diagnosis 2 years ago (and before being put on hydroxycarbamide) I was told quite emphatically by the consultant "no red meat and no red wine". For me not a problem as not a big red meat eater and prefer white wine. I know this cropped up in an MPN Advocacy webinar last year with not a strong recommendation against it but also not a ringing endorsement of eating red meat/wine. My understanding was this can have a similar effect to iron supplements and mess up the blood counts.
I guess it might also depend on how large the glass is...
My advice would be to discuss it with your specialist and monitor your blood counts. If you're looking for anti-inflammatory substances then maybe turmeric (curcumin), oregano, garlic etc. might be better (with specialist agreement regarding turmeric). Good luck.

There have been some studies on resveratol and Jak 2 etc but it needed huge amounts of resveratol , the amount in a few glasses of wine is negligible.Another Non MPN doc ie more a nutritionalist told me it would take about 30 bottles of a certain type of red wine to get enough resveratol to get any benefit gor general non MPN health. I take it in supplement form instead as 30 bottles of red wine at a sitting might be a bit “challenging” 😃
