Where is best to go?

Hi guys

Well, I am pretty sure we will be moving to Stratford upon Avon in the next few weeks. We are looking to go into an extra care scheme with independent living.

Now, what hospital do I go to with a good, reliable haematology department with a consultant who is an MPN specialist.

Any recommendations really appreciated.

Thanks everyone xx

I don’t know either Jill, but just to say what a lovely part of the country you’re moving to. Hope the move goes well. Xx

Thanks. At the moment I am living in a maze of boxes so the sooner the better. Cannot wait to get away from the drugs and crime in this area. The Yarm Fair is being held this weekend but police intelligence have warned that the fair is going to be used for gang war fights and weapons will be used. You can’t even take your family to the fair these days, terrible.

Good luck with your move Jill, lovely part of the country, I was there in the summer whilst on holiday in the Cotswolds. What will happen to your hedgehogs, I know you got so much pleasure from them?

PS. I think Oxford has a good heamatology department.

We have thought long and hard about the hedgehogs. We have 2 resident ones now, Clovis and Barbara. Over the last few nights we have also had another visitor who we call Flash as he/she has very distinctive white markings on their spines.

We removed their feeding station a few weeks ago but scattered their food over the garden so they had to forage. Clovis, who was so small she fit into the palm of of my husbands hand, has gotten very fat now so she will be fine. She has given up her hut now so I don’t know where she is sleeping but every night we see the 2, now 3, of them on the wildlife camera looking for grubs. We will cut back the feed a little bit at a time so they become totally reliant on finding their own.

We were thinking of taking them with us but we were afraid of urban foxes and, besides, this is their patch. We have decided to leave the huts and the water bowls and are going to ask the housing manager to ask the next resident if they can stay in the garden. If not I have a friend nearby who has a friendly hedgehog garden who will pick them up.

We are just happy that Clovis, who was so small we were unsure if she would survive, has grown into a big, strong girl. We will always think about her.

I used to live close to Stratford Upon Avon for many years. I have a brother who has an MPN also and he’s under Warwick but he hasn’t actually had a face to face meeting in aeons! Someone mentioned Oxford, I also lived in Oxfordshire on the Cotswolds, for many years and Oxford did have really good facilities, and they do a lot on MPN Also Adam ? Who is sometimes on our forums works from there (I believe) he is very instrumental in familial MPN and also spoke a great deal about Covid and the vaccines. I am a huge fan of Oxford so maybe I’m biased? But of course Stratford is Warwickshire so would they readily let you go to Oxford? Good luck with the move. Janice

I live north of you and have ET JAK2+. I have been with Dr Saleem Shafeek who workes at Worcester Royal Hospital and for Spire and BMI privately. He has been fantastic, very knowledgeable of MPNs and also so supportive as I have also recently been diagnosed with Prostate cancer, so we need to mange the 2 conditions and medication together with the oncologist. Dr Shafeek has helped enormously with this. I would certainly recommend you speak to him.
