Hello friends, I am from Ethiopia and I take Asprin daily and ferrous sulfate daily. My platelet number was 987, 000 last month when I tested. I was covid positive in February and tested negative after 14 days of quarantine time. I am worried to decide to take my first AZ

vaccine. I feel always fatigued and have headaches frequently. So friends what do you advise me ??

Welcome to the forum, my friend.

You should absolutely take the AZ vaccine. The risks of COVID are far higher than the risks of the vaccine.

My question to you: are you sure you actually have ET? You mention you take ferrous sulfate daily. This is an iron supplement used to treat iron deficiency or anemia. Iron deficiency is one of the most common causes of elevated platelets. Platelets can be elevated (thrombocytosis) due to primary causes (ET or other MPNs), or secondary/reactive causes (infection, injury, inflammation, iron deficiency, etc.). Secondary causes are, by far, more common than primary causes in the general population.

Can you tell us what testing they did you confirm your diagnosis of ET? Were you tested for mutations? Did they look for causes of reactive thrombocytosis?

Thank you for your prompt reply. I was testing bone marrow aspiration and gene mutation which has a result of not detected. the other bone marrow biopsy has not done yet. My haematologist said my case is Et based on the aspiration result. I have a low Ferritin level that is why he ordered a Ferrous tablet.

Do you know what specific genes they tested you for, or what they found in the aspirate that made them conclude it was ET?

The only reason I ask is that iron deficiency is one of the things they look for to rule out ET. If your genetic mutations came back negative, and you are clearly iron deficient and not on any medication that would be expected to cause low iron, it seems like the low ferritin itself could be causing the thrombocytosis as opposed to ET.

Is it possible to have low ferritin and ET? Yes. But statistically speaking, your chances of having thrombocytosis from iron deficiency alone are much higher.

I'm obviously operating under very limited information here, so I am just sharing my thoughts with you.

Hi Adeyabeba, I live in the UK and have had both AZ vaccines now, and had no issues other than a bit sore where they injected me. I feel so much relief that I now know my chances of getting really sick from Covid are very very small, as is having to be hospitalised because of it. The rate of blood clots is so low, when the risks to us are very high if we do have to go into hospital because of covid, I think it is a good thing to get the AZ if it is on offer to you.

All the best, and take care x
