Hope everyone has had a good Christmas. Has anyone had a ganglion and if so can you give me any advice. I have ET and take hydroxicarbamide and clopidogrel. Is there any connection with the sudden appearance of a ganglion? Thanks.

Hi. Yes I had quite a large one on my wrist joint Had surgery to remove it with no problems. I was told it wasn’t related to my ET I’m also on hydroxy and aspirin as well as blood pressure medication Pippa

Hi Sandylo Id heard of that just thinking was an 'old wives tale' and then I saw it on Doc Martin programme which was a real OUCH moment as the guy had it whacked hard by a large book. . From memory it didn't turn out so well for him so I think you were lucky it didn't burst or something. . . I'm astonished it worked for you but I'm sure it isn't recommend now when medical intervention is more readily available (well pre-Covid anyway) .

Regarding whacking with a book, I remember my sister trying this many years ago - she didn't hit it very hard and the ganglion went away of its own accord a few days later anyway.

I am reminded of the following exchange from Blackadder II

Nursie: Another good idea. You’re so clever today, you’d better make sure your foot doesn’t fall off.

Queenie: Is that what happens when you have good ideas? Your foot falls off.

Nursie: Oh yes! My brother had this brilliant idea of cutting his toenails with a scythe, and his foot fell off!

Hello,I have had several ganglions over the years but don’t believe they are ET related. In my case I think they were to do with repetitive strain connected to my job. My advice is not to hit it with a book. Yes, this is likely to burst it but in my case it caused a lot of pain and ended up with a visit to a hand & arm specialist and cortisone injections which aren’t pleasant to say the least.

I had a reoccurring one on my hand/wrist which caused me pain because it was stretching my tendons as I have very small hands. I had it aspirated, where they inject in to it and drain off the fluid, a couple of times and whilst this is uncomfortable it does the trick and is a better option than having surgery which would be a lot more invasive. If this doesn’t work and it’s causing you problems then surgery is the next step. Aspiration is a specialist procedure but a GP might give it a go.

Luckily my ganglion is dormant at the moment, but I think if I resume the same kind of work soon it’ll probably reappear 🙄

Hope this helps and you are able to get it sorted soon.

Best wishes,

Joanne

Thank you for the information. At least I now know more than I did when I posted the question.

Hello, I have a ganglion cyst on the top side of my foot. I initially got it years ago by lifting too heavy weights that put too much of a strain on my foot. It usually gives me no problem, but it did this fall and was so painful and swollen, I could not walk on it. I had spent most of the day raking leaves on a hill and put a lot of pressure on the side of my foot. I stayed off my foot, rested, and soaked it in Epsom Salts. After a few days, it got better.

Hope your ganglion gets better soon!!

I have been taking Clopidogrel for many years and although only diagnosed January 2018, I clearly had suffered from ET for a lot longer. I have not had any problems with ganglions or anything similar. So I can't see that clopidogrel could have an effect on this type of condition.
