Sharps Bin

I have a sharps bin for my Interferon needles, it's getting full, so I ring my local surgery to see if they can dispose, NO.

Rang the pharmacy, NO

They suggested I ring the local council, which I did, they will only pick up when I have 4 sharp bins full, that could take 4 years..

What does everyone else do?

That's very poor. When I was on Pegasys the medical centre disposed of it and gave me a replacement. Did you try the hospital pharmacy or was it just a high street one?

Oh thats not good - I do it via local Council they pick up one and drop the new one no hassle. Yes I would try hospital pharmacy or your consultants secretary to get some help. All the best

I got my sharps box collected by the local council. They have a department that deals with medical waste. Hope you are as lucky.

My surgery supplied me with tel no for local council office. I ring and they arrange a replacement and collect full bin . I would speak to your consultant if you have any problems . Good luck 🙋🏼

Hi there, Sharps bins can only be collected by your local council. I just store mine in a bag until I have 3 or 4 full.

Hi, when I need another bin, I mention it to Haematologist during my consultation & a new bin is provided from hospital pharmacy along with my Pegylated Interferon injections. Good luck.

Hi Yvette49, Hopefully that will work for you, I've never had a problem getting mine from hospital pharmacy. In fact I will be asking for another one in January. Take care !!

I have contacted my council, they said that they will only pick up when I have a minimum of 4 boxes, so on that basis I will have about 4 years worth of sharps to keep..

Its been suggested that the GP and Pharmacy won't take them as they would have to pay to have them destroyed...

Hi Shiftzz, crikey 4 😱 I am filling up my first bin, will have to ring the council soon too ( they were suggested to me) hopefully they will empty, don’t fancy having 4 containers sitting around for that amount of time.
