‘Sharps’ Bin

Hi ,

Sorry to ask such a trivial question, but I was given a sharps bin when I started Interferon a couple of months ago, but not told exactly what to put in it. I know you knowledgeable people will have the answer. Do you put just the needles in it for disposal, or should the empty syringes go in as well?

Thanks Chris

In New Zealand you put the whole syringe in it (just drop it in without bending the needle) but throw the caps & lids etc out in the rubbish. When full we take it to our dispensing chemist/pharmacy and they replace it with a new one.

Hi there, my husband has a sharps bin and when the nurses come to treat him they put the whole needle in it. Hope that helps.

The whole syringe and needle goes in as it is also a hazardous waste bin.

I put the whole lot in seems safer to me.

Thanks for advice, never thought to ask when they gave me the bin! I’ve been putting everything in, but as it was filling up quickly I wondered if it should only be needles.
