Hi Phyllis.

I had a UTI a couple of months back and was prescribed ‘Nitrofurantoin,’ which is sold under the trade name macrobid. I’m also on hydrea and it was ok with me. To be on the safe side you could always run it past the Pharmacist too if you’re concerned.

Hi mhos61,

Thank you so much for your reply to my query. I spoke with the pharmacist and she confirmed ok to take antibiotics for uti alongside hydroxy. I very much appreciate your taking time to reply.

Thanks again

It does not come up on the drug interaction app. as being a problem. You can safely take both, the pharmacist would also check this. You could, to feel reassured ask you pharmacist when you collect your meds.

Check with your pharmacist is always a good plan.

Make sure you follow the advice about how best to take nitrofurantoin. It can upset your stomach and if your symptoms improve it may be tempting to stop before the course is complete. Don't.

Do be sure to talk to your hematologist about the UTI. Dysuria is one of the known side effects of HU. HU can lower your body's immunity to a number if infections, so it is important to let the doc know of any changes like that you notice. Not to say that is for sure the HU, but you do want to be sure to work with your doc to monitor your reactions.
