High Platelets Count

Hello everyone

For last 10 days I had high fever and high cough, the doctor said I had viral fever and chest congestion and gave me Paracip 500 and cough syrup. The fever went away in a weeks’ time, after which I myself went for a blood test the blood test showed high TLC(Total Leucocyte Count, whole blood) 13.4 and Higher Platelets count 481(Normal range 150-450). I consulted the and doctor gave me antibiotics Augmentin 625 and dry cough syrup and multivitamins for 3 days , after which I again got another blood test , now TLC(8.60) is normal but blood platelet count has risen to 541.

The doctor has asked me to continue antibiotics for 2 more days and cough syrup and 1 MONTAIR LC Tablet medicine for 3 days. I am otherwise feeling ok, except some weakness may be due to anxiety over high Platelet count.

Kindly advise me what to do I am puzzled and full of anxiety over my high blood platelet count.

Morning my lovely

Can you contact your consultant with your concerns? If yours is anything like mine they will talk you through what is happening.

It’s easy to say stop worrying but your body seems to have gone through a temporary rough time so maybe it’s just your bodies reaction to all that is has had thrown it at the moment.

Please, just phone your haematologist because the stress can not be helping the situation and one phone call could answer all your questions.

Take care and Godbless

Jill

Have you been diagnosed with an MPN? If not, this is probably not the site for you.

Hi. Platelet counts can rise for all sorts of reasons including infection. So since you have recently been unwell and on antibiotics that may well be the cause. It sounds like your GP is being very sensible in repeating the blood test. Platelet counts can go up and down. The important thing is the trend. I’m sure that if another blood test shows a further increase then your GP will refer you to a haematologist for more detailed tests. It seems you are getting very good care and your GP is aware and on the case. The important thing is, if something is amiss, then it’s being monitored and addressed. I know it’s easier said than done but please just focus on getting yourself well. As you note, the anxiety isn’t doing you much good! This Forum is always here if you have further questions. Wishing you all the best.

Increased leukocytes are the body's normal response to infection. Reactive thrombocytosis can occur for a number of reasons. Platelet counts naturally rise as your body's normal reaction to bleeding, inflammation, or injury. If you tend to stay on the high side of normal, brief reactions that take you above that level are nothing to worry about. Looking at old blood tests should let you and your doc evaluate this.

If your platelet (or leukocyte/erythrocyte) counts stay above norm, then further evaluation is warranted. Would expect the next step if your counts stay high to be checking for the primary MPN related mutations (JAK2, CALR, MPL). Continued monitoring will tell you what is going on with hematopoiesis (production of blood cells).

Meanwhile try not to worry too much. I was diagnosed with Essential Thrombocythemia over 30 years ago. Progressed to Polycythemia Vera about 6 years ago. Still alive and kicking! Most of us live long lives, that despite some challenges, can be rich full lives.

All the best.
