I've got ET like many of you . I was wondering though if there is a similar forum for very low platelet count? I've got a friend whose mum has this . I know how helpful this forum is and wondered if there was any info . I've had a wee look but couldn't find much . Is this not considered an MPN ? Thanks Ca Xx

Hey Carly... :-)

Sorry to hear that you are having a few problems...

Initially, I too was diagnosed as ET, however, after my BMB (bone marrow biopsy), was Graded2, I was reclassified as Pre-Fibrotic MF. So now I am termed Post ET / MF.

I have the opposite problem, w/ very high platelet counts, and I have just learned of a further complication by being Positive for Von Willebrands Disease (VWD). Essentially, it means that I might be having some bleeding issues as well...

I have also had two (2) TIAs, (minor brain strokes), possibly contributed to from my very high platelet regime... (?)

Low Platelets, conversely, are often associated with what is called 'Thrombocytopenia'

"Thrombocytopenia is a condition in which you have a low blood platelet count. Platelets (thrombocytes) are colorless blood cells that help blood clot. Platelets stop bleeding by clumping and forming plugs in blood vessel injuries.

Thrombocytopenia often occurs as a result of a separate disorder, such as leukemia or an immune system problem. Or it can be a side effect of taking certain medications. It affects both children and adults.

Thrombocytopenia may be mild and cause few signs or symptoms. In rare cases, the number of platelets may be so low that dangerous internal bleeding occurs. Treatment options are available.".

Thee are others here that I am sure will respond to you in due course, that also suffer from a Low Platelet regime...

Hope this helps you a little Carly...

Best wishes

Carly,

I do hope I have not made you even more apprehensive... That was not my intention of course...

Please do consult with your medical team as to what their thoughts for your treatment might be going forward. If you are unhappy with them for any reason... Please do seek a 2nd opinion...

We really MUST all be our own very best advocates, in my view... :-)

The answer is YES! And you should find those people here too...

Many people who are currently on Ruxolitinib, with Myelofibrosis, often suffer from Thrombocytopenias due the the nature of Immunosuppressive Therapy. There would be quite a few people here that should be able to assist you further...
