Elevated platelets
It seems like you have a lot going on, so no wonder you are stressed. But do try not to worry too much about the platelets just yet. It's good that you're having blood work done, and there are many reasons platelets may rise, and even if it turns out you have ET or another MPN like people on this forum, it's all treatable, and you'll be around for decades. My best advice to you is not to Google what elevated platelets may mean - what you'll find isn't related to your situation, the information is often contradictory, out of date, confusing, and just frustrating. At this point your platelets are only marginally above "normal" - and in some countries "normal" is at 450, so you're not at that level. So if you can, stay away from Dr Google, and wait until your blood work is complete and see what your doctor says. Take care.
Platelets rise & fall for many reasons as wileyfrench noted. Even time of day can fluctuate the levels. The white blood cells are usually the indicator for more serious cancers & again these fluctuate for many other benign reasons. So relax & focus on being there for your Mum.
I was in exactly the same situation as you two years ago. My platelets were around 475 I was referred for further hospital blood investigation work including being tested for JAK2 and also had a bone marrow needle aspiration all investigations proved negative thankfully. A year later following monthly blood tests I was discharged from hospital blood testing and remain to this day with platelets around 475. My GP says this is my new normal! So I totally agree with avoiding dr google until you know if the hospital has any concerns, time to enjoy xmas!!
