Hi there. I was given a blood test 3 weeks ago from my mental health doctor, I have depression and anxiety. It came back with high platelets at 481. For about 10 years I had high white blood cells. This is the first test I've gotten where they were actually normal. I did have tests run for hat a few years ago and nothing was found. I know that I have had the high platelets for a few years though I can't remember what the levels were. While I'm happy that my WBC is normal I am terrified about the high platelets. I see my actual doctor next week. I'm just so worried now.

High platelets
Don't panic!! Your platelets are only marginally high & there are so many things that can cause this; stress, infection, dehydration and even what time of day the bloods were taken and how they were handled. The doctor will monitor them & if they are elevated for an extended period of at least 6 months or rise rapidly there is usually no need for concern. Hopefully your doctor can reassure you when you visit. 😁
Thanks for the reassurance. I'm trying not to freak out but I have health anxiety so that makes it hard. I know they are only kinda high which I'm sure is a good thing rather than bad. I'm the most worried at the moment about blood clots. I've never had any but now I'm terrified that because of the platelets I will get one.
A lot of people deal with platelets over 1000. Stress will do more damage than most things. Clots are intricate processes caused by many things; red & white cells, platelets, a lot of the foods we eat (wheat can supposedly make little tears in arteries), age. All we can do is eat healthy, exercise, try some meditation apps or get involved with Thai chi etc, massage. You may wish to look into supplements like good quality fish or krill oil (usually not from supermarkets though, very low quality - rancid).
I wouldn’t be too concerned. They are not so high. There are other factors to consider which your doctor will check out.
I do hope your doctor also tested your Vitamin B12, Folate, vit D and all your thyroid hormones too , all of which can cause mental health issues especially depression and anxiety.
As the others have said your platelets really aren’t that high so try not to worry. Mine tick along at around 1300 and it doesn’t stop me doing anything 😁
I am trying so hard not to worry, but I'm definitely a worry wart. At this point I'm more worried about blood clots.
I wouldn't worry at the moment. Get your bloods done again in a few weeks. As others have said, 481 isn't very high. Even so, mine run at around 1200-1400. I still only take aspirin, so even if they ARE high, it isn't necessarily the worst news. Good luck!
Yep - don't panic, this result is only very slightly 'up. Some laboratories take the norm as 4-- some take it as 450 so at 481 you are barely above normal.
Good afternoon from Fleetwood England.
If it's your nature to worry, like a lot of us on here at least you have come to the right site.

It took my team three months.
It was quiet stressful.
But I found this site and the support I received helped me.
Good luck.
Ps don't Doctor Google.
You can make your self worse.
Thank you to everyone for the reassuring words. I really appreciate it!
I agree with others. Please don't panic at the moment and stress yourself out, that would do more harm than good. Your platelets are only a little bit higher, normal range is up to 450, so here you are, not to worry please. I agree go for a healthy anti-inflammatory diet will do good all around, keep hydrated (drink more water) and any sort of exercise even walking is good. You know platelets can be higher even when a person not feeling well. Please not to worry yourself sick.
Also worth knowing that serotonin is carried in the platelets so this can have an effect on anxiety & depression, something I wasn’t aware of when diagnosed
Best wishes to you
Melanie
I wouldn't worry about your platelets being 481 that is nothing as mine was over 1000 when I was diagnosed with ET My specialist told me even if they were about 600 it doesn't matter so much as anything lower on the medication I am taking can cause tiredness.
Oh don't worry mine apparently had been rising over 500 for 14 years they were 950 when found I had no symptoms what so ever luckily. Stay healthy and exercise, good luck
Hi Cutiepie (love the name!)
Please don’t be worried. Even if it is ET. Regarding the depression and anxiety, I have been studying chronic illnesses and neurodegenerative diseases and alternative treatments for 1.5 years. 580 pages of notes. From experience and from what I’ve learned, 80-85% of all depression and anxiety problems are based in the gut, not in the brain!! Since going on the AutoImmune Paleo diet and getting rid of all processed foods and chemicals and chemical cosmetics from my home, I have not had the tiniest bit of depression. I was suffering on and off for almost 40 years.
Now that I‘ve had blood cancer for 9 years already, just diagnosed 2 years ago at 823 platelets, I‘m emotionally stable!! Eat whole foods and organic. Lay off the grains and other GMOs and milk products. This might be your very simple answer.
Also MPNs, if you have one of them, is not the end of the world. It is a journey, well treatable and you can live very well with it for a long time. There’s a lot of help here and love. Let us know what the doctor says. Cheers, Anag
