Hi all. My lovely wife, has been suffering with an upper GI bleed these past few days. Her normal haematologist is away. We contacted the hospital and the haematologist there arranged a FBC today. This afternoon called to say she would arrange an Iron infusion for Friday, and I was to tee it up with them tomorrow. My Wife's hgb was 94 this morning, it has been near that before, but she is quite well otherwise. Is it a normal thing to have an Iron infusion?

Hi jointpain,
I can help I’m afraid as I have never needed an iron infusion. I did have a GI bleed some years ago but had iron tablets for that.
We haven’t heard from you for a while and I was wondering how your wife was doing.
I hope someone can put your mind at rest.
Best wishes
Judy
That's very kind of you Judy. We are doing OK. I look out for Joyce and she looks out for me. 😍 Her platelets are quite controlled and have been in the normal range for some time.
I once had an iron infusion for a GI bleed followed by investigations through endoscopies. The bleeding stopped of its own accord. I also had an infusion after a simple drop in haemoglobin. I am on a blood thinner which makes a bleed a bit more alarming. I have ET and MDS.
Hi Jointpain. I'm sorry to hear your wife is having this problem. I have ET and am always low on iron, my count is currently 95. I had an iron infusion at the end of last year, no problems, it took a couple of weeks for me to feel the effects , I felt really good made such a difference .
I wish you both well and hope your wife is soon back on track.
Regards Sandy
Thank you Sandy. It's just that we had never heard of it before. Last time she had a major GI bleed she had five units of blood.
So pleased to read your wife's platelets are in a good place, as Judy said after your nightmare of last year, good to hear positive news.
Hope all goes well tomorrow. x
Interestingly my cns was talking about me considering having iron via iv because i can't tolerate the tablets. I have been experiencing severe headaches for several weeks now which are not abating. I have been struggling with low hgb which as increased after i incorporated more iron rich foods in my diet but looking back at previous fbc's over the past year my rbc's have been consistently low. Not once as my(soon to be old) haematologist mentioned this to me, i discovered this through my gp and asking for a copy of my previous tests. I was given the news friday i have been referred to a mpn specialist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham which i eagerly await so finally i can get straight answers to straight questions. In the meantime i will hold off the suggestion of iv iron in the hope my rbc's increase slowly along with my hgb. Atb,tina.🤗
