Hi folks, tried to find the answers that were posted a little while ago regarding our children and grandchildren who are receiving the flu drops at school, my grandson is having his tomorrow. I know that it is a live virus for them so how long do we need to stay clear of them with our MPNs, any ideas.

Hi, I work in a primary school so was surrounded by lots of them that had the drops
, the nurses who did the vaccine said 2 weeks but my hospital said ok to go back to work next day. Very mixed messages. I did go back next day and have been ok.
I specifically asked my Dr when I had jab as I was concerned last year, he said not too worry. If you were the main and only carer for a child there is no way you could keep away from them. The only thing I have been careful with is my granddaughter with her MMR jabs, I have still seen her but been careful not to change nappies and to wash my hands if wiping a runny nose.
Hi , I have ET, take hydroxyurea 1.5g daily. I am a nurse who delivers the nasal flu imm around my county. So far I have been involved in the delivery of nearly 6000 flu imms. My own 2 children have had the imm.
Advise from PHE is you only need to stay away from these children if you are isolated in hospital say having a bone marrow transplant.
If you go out in the community to shops/post office you are exposed to hundreds of litres of bacteria anyway.
I hope this clarifies what seems to be very mixed messages health care professionals are advising.
Thanks for that Nicky, I think the problem is that nurses, certainly when my grandchildren had their live immunisations, ask if the child will be in contact with anyone having Chemo. The chemo we take for our MPN is a very low dose compared to someone having intravenous chemo. Or, as you say BMT. As I’ve said before on this site I don’t feel my immunity is severely compromised by the dose I take.
Nicky, that is such a helpful and to the point reply. This question gets asked lots.
Maz - I wonder if it might be possible to put a winter flu ‘flash’ on the MPN Voice website home page alerting people to a) the need for the vaccine and b) providing advice / reassurance regarding the live vaccine? (Apologies if this has been done - can’t double check right now.)
Hi Nickyanne, sound advice,it would be impossible to keep away from everyone who have had live vaccines & people with coughs and colds in the community. The dose is minute compared to those having it intravenously. My granddaughter had the MMR vaccine recently & my grandson as got the sniffles constantly,i would spend no time with them on the basis we have to avoid them for a certain period of time. Its just a matter of being more cautious regarding washing our hands more often.
My grandson had it a few weeks ago ! I do the school run and share a house with him and no ill effects . He had it last year too and it was the first year he didn't bring the flu into the house.
