Low BUN/creatinine ratio

My BUN/creatinine ratio was below normal on my last blood test. It has never been abnormal before. I started hydroxyurea about a month ago. Anyone experience this before?

One of the things that I enjoy about any new area of knowledge is the new language - and the phrase BUN/ creatinine ratio tickled me. Possibly because I’ve just sent a friend an email about Christmas food. I know I could easily google it to find out what it is, but if I do that I’m likely to get lost on the internet. I get very easily distracted these days.

But , seriously, I hope its OK .

Sorry, can’t help. I’ve checked all my blood test results and can’t see this on there? Is it normally included in a full blood count?

Thanks, piggie. It’s not in the regular CBC, but it’s in the metabolic panel, so when they’re looking for kidney and liver function, potassium, stuff like that.

I like to use this site when I have questions about labs:

labtestsonline.org/tests/bl...

This sounds really familiar to me and I think I may have been low on this as well and in my case no one was concerned about it. I would have to go through my records to be sure.

In the UK they don't tend to routinely do BUN/creat ratio. Usually its just urea rather than BUN. I think if you had a low ratio it might show that you were very well hydrated. Other causes can be if protein level is bit low but if you are a MPNer you are probably drinking lots of water so that's the likely cause. A high BUN/creat ratio would be more of a concern and would indicate possible dehydration or kidney issues so I wouldn't worry too much unless it was wildly abnormal. Good luck
