Alcohol consumption

Hi. I did not ask my doctor if I am allowed to drink wine or beer. I did not have any since I started Hydro nearly a month ago and I really don't miss it, although I liked to have a glass or two of wine before. Tomorrow I am invited out for dinner. What should I do?

Hi Kelly, I have ET JAK 2 Posative and take Hydroxycarbamide, I still enjoy a glass or two of wine now and then but always try to have with food. In moderation is fine. I also drink plenty of water each day which helps flush anything through, so feel that I can enjoy a glass or two when I am out with friends or at the weekends and at home with my hubby, at the moment all my bloods are good have been for quite some time.

Go out and enjoy your evening with friends, that’s what life is all about.

I know it sounds daft, but always now put ice into my wine, one it makes it a long drink, but it is also waters it down which helps, mind you not a good idea to do it with red wine. 🥂🍷🤪

Like Jean I drink lots of water (1.5 to 2 litres per day), and still have wine and other drinks. I have ET and am on hydroxy and clopidogrel. I’m not stupid about it but I’m still going to live life.

I’m on Pegasys but drink 2 1/2 bots per week and more than double that on hols. No symptoms.

I exercise, eat healthily and drink plenty of water to compensate. We need to continue enjoying life!

Hi. I’m the odd one apparently. I’m ET, JAK2+, Hydroxyurea. The specialists I’ve seen have said the same thing: better not to but one drink rarely won’t hurt me. Katie

Hi Kelly - my husband is ET Jak2 neg and has been on Hydroxy for 9 years ....... it is not a hypnotic drug so you are safe to drink alcohol. Just keep your water intake up and don't substitute it for alcohol. Enjoy!!!!

Hi Kelly. I have been on Hydroxy for about seven years now and still enjoy my wine in the evenings. I did ask my specialist nurse and he said it was fine. Enjoy your evening out 😊. Lesley x

Hi Kelly. Just to add to what the others say. I have ET and take Hydrea. I still drink wine and an occasional g and t Water is the key and not too much alcohol. Enjoy your nights out. Margo

Hi Kelly2!

I had asked my doctor when starting the Hydrea and now on Jakafi, about drinking. What she said was, that it is fine, but not overdo. I have found that with these meds, you obtain the buzz much quicker! I love my grey goose cosmos, so I now limit myself to one...and two glasses of white wine is my max. Doing shots of tequila?? Only one...

Hope this helps😂😂🥂🍸

Hi guys I’m really interested to know what the verdict is on alcohol when you aren’t on medication! Does anyone know? I was diagnosed with PV a few weeks ago. When I asked about alcohol my doctor said to continue life like I have been doing however I didn’t mention that my friends and I usually drink around 6-8 drinks on a night out! How much is too much if not on medication? I’m 26 and am just taking aspirin at the moment

Becareful not to overdo do as you really will wake up feeling crap. But hey, we still need to enjoy ourselves. After you finished drinking alcohol drink loads of water, even if it means getting up in the night for bathroom visits.

Well I went out, had dinner and a great time, had one sip of red wine and I even didn't want more!! I think it's all in the mind as all this time I thought I really shouldn't have any. I drank water and liked it very much as Chinese food is salty! 😄👍

My doc actually told me to drink red wine! As everyone above here said, enjoy life, wine and water!

Hi, I’m ET and Jak2+. Have always liked a drunk on a weekend and my doctor says it’s ok to drink, but since my disorder which I started with last March and take aspirin and Hydroxycarbamide I find I can’t tolerate it much now, I have to limit what I have as I get racing heart and pains in chest which then scares me, so for every drink I have water aswell which helps abit, so I think in moderation and listen to your body. my original dr. told me to drink 3 glasses of red wine per week to strengthen my blood and my new dr. said no alcohol and wrote on my chart, "purportedly told to drink 3 glasses of wine by Dr."! Glad to hear it's OK
