You should see your doctor and have your B12 serum level checked, also ask for your intrinsic factor to be checked. In the meantime do not take any B12 supplements or they will skew the results.
I'm by no means an expert but I think raises red cell count is a symptom of PV. I have PV myself. I was originally diagnosed with ET but after around a year my consultant noticed raised red blood cell count and changed my diagnosis to PV. I now have venesections every 6 to 8 weeks to keep rbc down. I hope this helps.
You don't mention if you are on Hydroxyurea or other treatment. An upward trend in MCV can be the result of Hydroxyurea treatment, my MCV was 110 at my last test, and it has been working its way upward each month since beginning HU last January. I'll ask my hematologist about it on Wednesday when I see her, but I suspect that it won't be regarded as a thing to really worry about just yet.
hi I'm not on any treatment waiting for first appt with with haem so not sure about the red cell volume I also have raised red cell counts ,haemorcrit ,hemoglobin & white cells also doc referee me for PV ( suspected ) but was confused with the red cell volume ?
I should have read your previous posts before I commented before and I would have seen that you weren't on medication as yet! Sorry about that! It will be an anxious time for you as you wait for your first appointment, and I certainly remember very well what all the waiting and uncertainty was like! I'm glad you found the forum at this point as you can ask questions and also pick up a lot of useful information through reading what others have said. It took me a few months to really accept what was going on with me after I was diagnosed, a process rather like grieving, and people here were very kind in encouraging me when I felt "down" or confused. Do make a list of questions that you have and take them to your appointment with your hematologist when that comes through.
My Mean Cell Volume is raised, averaging 110Fl, and I understood this was a result of the Hydroxy. Also Mean cell Hg (raised) and Mean cell Hg conc. -which varies. My red cells were slightly high on diagnosis (of PV) but have been controlled by the hydroxy., as has my haematocrit.
