Hello, I know to a lot of people this will seem like a trivial question, but I was wondering whether people still have hair colours and highlights and lowlights. My hairdresser is reluctant to use colour while I’m on hydroxycarbamide but my hair has gone quite grey and needs something doing to it!
Thankyou for any advice!

I was wondering too so I looked through some old posts and yes it's ok as long as you follow the instructions and do an allergy test first . I believe Maz our coordinator on here revealed her glorious blue hair on a previous post . Pippa
Hi Juliet, Pippa Is correct our Maz has some lovely blue in her hair, I also have two colours every four or five weeks depending how fast the old grey comes through done with foils and she paints the roots with a darker colour first then rinses off dries then the foils, bit long winded I know but used to have the foiles done then she would do the roots in one go but we found as I have got older the hair has become a bit more porous so started to bleed into the blond .
My hairdresser had breast cancer so knows what she is doing regarding colours and bleach and used really good products even shampoos are the best, my hair always looks good these days plus it is good for your self esteem don’t you think, so go for it as I have said in the past I have ET JAK 2 positive on Hydroxycarbamide, Aspirin, Thyroxin and Zestril for blood pressure.
I asked my hairdresser again and she has said that providing she does a skin test you should be fine.
Those that know me are aware of my hair colour I we are it.like a picture.
May I share this neat trick with you.when I retired from forty years in the NHS.I let my hair become its natural colour.First I had it cut short, it took three weeks to come through, I then used eye shadows to brush through to make colour tips.
Now since taking hydroxyl I am finding my hair has made my black bits stronger again so I am thinking colour hair sprays.
Hi, I was on Hydroxy for a couple of years and my haematologist was perfectly happy for me to continue my regular 6 weekly hair colour. Best wishes, Frances.
I asked the same question on this forum two years ago after my diagnosis. I hope you are reassured by all of the supportive replies. I definitely agree that if it helps your sense of well being it is of great benefit health wise. So far, I only need mine "touched up" about every 10 weeks. I sometimes have streaks and sometimes just have my roots done and my hairdresser always checks for hair loss and damage. So far all doing well.
Hi Juliet, as the lovely ladies have said, I do indeed have blue hair, I bleach it first and then put in 5-7 different blues, purple and lilac, I do it about every 12 weeks, been doing it for years now and no probs, I am on Hydroxycarbamide as well, my hairdresser who only cuts my hair, says it is in very good condition, so I don't worry about colouring it, so you go ahead and have your highlights etc. Best wishes, Maz
Didn’t realise their might be a problem with hair colouring. I was letting my hair go grey but about a year ago I started having highlights again. It didn’t occur to me that I should have worried about this, so I assume it will be ok to carry on.
Hi Juliet. You can see by my photo that my hair (was) light blond. I've been on Hydroxyurea for six months and it has turned my new hair white as snow. It has clearly thinned as well and my eyelashes have some gaps.
I am camouflaging things pretty well. I would ask my hematologist if there would be concerns regarding hair color. I am from a medical background.
Hesitation to color seems OVERLY cautious. I have bought 5 wigs on Amazon. They are inexpensive. My favorite only cost $15.00 US. To bad they itch or give you a head ache. I think I am going to make a flannel barrier between my up-swept hair and the inside of the wig.
I would be amazed if your Dr. discouraged hair color. Post what you do.
I am considering some highlights my self. There is a product called ROUX.
It is a color rinse that washes out when you shampoo. It comes in lots of shades. It makes everything match for me and turns white into a beige blond - my color is Spun Sand for any of you with new white hair.
I was thinking yesterday I could have my Dr. prescribe "Latisse". It's claim to fame is eyelash growth. The box comes with the cheapest individual brushes. I used a quality, thin eyeliner brush and found I used less and it was more effective..
I used it several years ago long before my ET JAK2 diagnosis. I think I will give it a whirl again.
Thankyou for replying! I’ve had lots of helpful advice from people on here and am going to think about what I’m going to do and not rush into anything. I’ve always gone for really light blonde highlights but think it’s time for a change !
