Hi Guys, has anybody else, who uses Hydroxy, noticed a marked thinning and loss of hair. I noticed this morning after I had washed my hair that it is receding really badly and is so much thinner. When I saw how much I had lost around the top of my forehead I was worried. Does anybody have any product they have used to help with hair loss.
I am seeing an Endocrinologist this afternoon to see if my poor diet is contributing to my blood sugar spikes and slurred speech so I will be asking if it can also cause my hair loss.
if it is due to the Hydroxy I can imagine somebody else must be having problems with their hair. Just thought I would put it to you lovely people.

Hi Jilly, I have just read your letter and can say I am experiencing the same problems as you are , I am on Hydroxy as well 1x500 per weekday and 2x500 each weekend day, I saw my Haematology doc last month and did say to him about my hair thinning badly (looks bad to me, others say they don't notice it ) but we all know our own bodies don't we? I asked if it was the Hydroxy that causes it and there was any remedy I could use. I didn't expect the answer. He said 'well yes of course it is, what do you expect we are feeding you poison!!!!! Very reassuring eh? So as he said nothing can be done. Sorry to be sharing this info but if you're like me you need to know the nitty-gritty. I have heard there is a lotion that can help thinning hair but the drawback is you have to use it forever otherwise the hair returns to our 'normal' it's a real pain but if you ever find a 'cure' please share. all the best and keep smiling. June.
I have noticed over the last 6 weeks that my hair gone a lot thinner, Taking Hydroxy for 7 years now . When l started on Hydroxy my hair went a bit fine. But now it is a lot thinner, and in my forehead too. I am thinking about buying a wig !
Hi Jilly, sorry, but think all these chemo drugs do cause hair loss. But since been taking Silica, think has helped. Also given up brushing my hair, and just use a wide toothed comb instead. Also wash hair less often, as that was causing more loss. Sorry can't be more upbeat for you. Kindest wishes, always, Tinkerbell
Thanks Tinks, I think I have to accept the bad with the good and deal with the hair loss. A friend suggested using a BedHead product that is a thickener and shiner for the hair. It comes in a round yellow bottle with a pink pump and I got some off the fragrance direct site. Well I tried it this afternoon and what a difference. It makes your hair seem thicker and the shine is lovely. I am waiting to make sure it doesn't dry my hair out with prolonged use so watch this space xx
Hi Jilly, I too have had thinning of my hair since starting on Hydroxyurea 2 years ago. With the exception of Minoxidil (Rogaine), I don’t think there’s anything that stimulates new hair growth, there are just products that make what hair you have look thicker.
By the way, here’s a bit of trivia for you—did you know that Minoxidil was actually a medication that was taken in pill form to treat high blood pressure? Then patients who were taking it started noticing that their hair was becoming thicker and growing back in places where it had become thin or balding. A side effect of the Minoxidil!
Now Minoxidil comes in different forms and is marketed more for its hair growing properties (as Rogaine) than for lowering blood pressure.
So now I’m thinking—I don’t have any blood pressure issues, but if I did, I would probably ask my doc if he could put me on Minoxidil to help my blood pressure and help my hair growth at the same time?
Hi, thinning is listed a side effect of Hydroxy. I noticed it but didn't find anything to help much. I did take a vitamin supplement specifically for hair with my consultants agreement, there are several on the market. Can't say I noticed a huge difference I'm afraid. Good luck and best wishes, F.
Yes my hair had gone considerably thinner. Taking 500g for 5days then 1000g for weekends. I spoke to my hairdresser who said if I had my hair cut in a shorter style it would help disguise the thinning, as long hair pulls the hair down - makes sense to me. Also if you have dyed hair make sure your roots are coloured all the time because the grey accentuates the thinning. Other than miraculous cure I think we have to put up with it!!
I have been on Hydroxicarbamide since last December, 1000 per day.
I have definitely got hair loss/thinning all around the hairline & on the crown, I too have noticed change of colour, my hair has been all over natural white for many years, I now have an area at the back that has gone almost black, also where bits are beginning to grow again it's showing a black colour. All seems very strange, my consultant is convinced it's not the drug, but I think I disagree.
I was on Hydroxy for a year - my Haem then took me off it as it was causing my blood levels to drop too much. I had marked thinning of my hair while I was on the medication, but now lots of new hair is growing and my hair appears back to normal. It definitely was the Hydroxy causing the hair loss. SkipperL
I am sorry for you and for the others that are experiencing this. I suspect that the "H bomb" that I take each day is having a similar effect on me, however it is harder to judge in my case as I had already "thinned" a lot naturally over the last few years (understatement!). I am rather suddenly aware of rather a lot of head showing now and am feeling a bit self conscious about it because the final stages of this seems to have happened quickly. It is not a real problem for me, because I just blend in with other late middle aged balding men (boo hoo!), but ... I rather wish that I still had a good thatch on top (and that I was 30 years younger!!). I sometimes dream of buying a wi g with dreadlocks and re-branding myself as an ageing rock star..
hey there, age is just a number. I would think twice about the dreadlocks but everything else is doable. Bald is sexy, if you are worrying about the bald patches then go the whole hog and have a number 1 all over, just stay out of strong sun lol.
Thank you for helping me start the day with a smile! The "bald is sexy" is something I should have embroidered on my hat! I still think that I would suit dreads, and they would be great for shade and for keeping pesky summer flies away ... a bit like those Australian hats with the corks hanging around the brim! 😀
