Sickness: Hello everyone!! I have been on... - MPN Voice
Sickness
I have been on Hydroxycarbamide and occasionally I felt sick. I now realise there are certain foods that spark of the sickness now that I am on Hydroxycarbamide. I have identified which food make me sick and avoid them. One of the things that makes me sick is liquorice which I love so occasionally I risk it. Afterwards I have Andrews in a bit of lemonade, does the trick for me.
When I was feeling nauseous after taking a completely different tablet it was suggested I drink peppermint tea or ginger tea (or anything else gingery) to help. They worked for me.
However, do remember that not all your health problems are caused by an MPN. We can still feel sick, get an upset tum, etc like everyone else, I know I have to stand back when facing a new 'problem' and try to analyse whether it has some completely separate cause. If you continue to feel sick tell your Haematologist as they can give you something to stop it in its tracks - I haven't had to go down that route ... yet.
Hi Sue, I've been on hydroxycarbamide for about a year now and at suffered nausea every day for about 9 months. I kind of learnt to live with it, but then I couldn't manage any more. I agree with Raffles, it could be specific foods. I have changed/improved my diet (I thought my diet was pretty good) . I did a detox first for about a week, and now I don't have any sugars, for which I was going to for energy, have reduced gluten and have increase proteins (meat eggs etc.) it has helped significantly, though I do still get nausea at times.
However, saying that, at about the same time as changing the diet my GP suggested the nausea could be caused by H. pylori, a common type of bacteria that grows in the digestive tract (many people have to some degree). She tested, and I did have, and took a course of antibiotics.
So it could be either or, though the change of diet has helped my energy levels - sugars weren't helping!
I hope you feel better soon, I totally empathise - its just horrible. Sue
Thank you, I will try looking at my diet x
Hello Sue
A lovely lady on a previous post has just suggested a gum called Seaband which you can buy over the counter for nausea. It contains ginger which will help. I have anti-sickness tables which were prescribed when I was put on my chemo. I very rarely feel sick but if I do the tablets resolve this immediately. Have you taken your chemo without food or at a different time? I usually find I feel nauseous if I do this so try and take mine every day at the same time with my evening meal.
There are a lot of bugs/germs flying around this time of year so it may be that. Our immune systems are low which makes up more prone to pick up bugs.
I hope this helps.
Best wishes
Angela
I had a variety of replies to my post 'something for nausea' one of the suggestion was Seaband Gum, however I cant seem to locate it in the UK other than on Amazon and Ebay. I dont want to buy it from either as I don't trust them not to sell fakes.
