Platelets on the rise!

Hi Guys, saga continues - my platelets have risen from 460 ish to 592. Not sure if this is due to my anemia after my venesection (for PV) which shouldn't have happened. Has anyone else experienced this? The clinic nurse has emailed my haem so we will see what he suggests as my hct is low still. Kind regards Aime x

Hi

My platelets recently went up to 468 when i had a series of bugs and was run down, although they have droppd again now.

Could be if your run down then this is what has affected them.

Another reason, which is just guess work and could be well wide of the mark, might be that the sudden 'loss' of blood your body experienced because of the error in the venesection may have made your body think it had been bleeding and needed to produce more platelets to counter this. Maybe someone who has more scientific knowhow might have a view on this.

Hi everyone. I had a stupid fall two months ago when I overbalanced stretching up to adjust something. I hit the the poor bedside table who had done nothing to deserve the onslaught, on my way down. Result of course, extensive bruising and torn tendons in my shoulder restricted arm mobility with lots of pain and.....raised platelets. My haematologist waited to see if they would decrease naturally but eventually my hydroxy dose was raised slightly to regulate hopefully. I must stop being so accident prone and doing stupid things like climbing on furniture instead of getting a pair of steps.

My physio has not even started yet as they are so busy and inundated. It begins on Christmas Eve! So...Merry Christmas, Peace and stable health to you all and thank you all for being there. New Year resolutions anyone? I know mine!❤

Hi CrazyDaisy - ouch!! We all do it - overstretch, lose balance and suffer the consequences. I suppose if the body bleeds because of injury the platelets will rise to protect the blood system. Take care, hope your physio helps. Any time I have had shoulder ops the exercises have definitely helped. If you can do them in warm water in a hydrotherapy pool they work even better. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!! Aime xx PS new year's resolutions - to stop feeling sorry for myself and remember all the folk who are worse off!!

My platelets went up when I was anaemic. I have to go back in March to have my bloods checked again to make sure they also go back down again!

Hi Shazzer, thank you for your reply. It's good to know that you have been through same. We will see what haem suggests. Hopefully just another blood test and nothing too scary!! Hope your bloods are good when you get them checked in March, will let you know how I get on. Take care, best wishes Aime xx PS All the best for 2015

Hi Guys, Just an update. My haem contacted my GP and I am on iron tablets (one a day) for 2 weeks only so hopefully that will help. I also have very small red blood cells - has anyone else been told this? My haem thinks the rise in platelets is due to anemia as a result of the extra venesection! Next blood test in 4 weeks so hopefully be back down again. Have a great xmas and new year - and have as healthy 2015 as possible. Best wishes Aime x

I had the same experience. All my numbers were down apart from the platelets that were on the way up. I've had a two month course of iron - but I have ET, so slightly different concerns than you. I finished my course last week. I was feeling better whilst on the iron but right now I'm starting to feel rough again. :-/ I think I really need to be seen in rheumatology but have no idea when that is going to happen. I'll spare you the hissy fit though and wish you well! Have a lovely Christmas.

Oh Shazzer you poor soul! I have sore joints as well as PV and it is not nice! What I would do if your GP has already referred you is keep phoning the rheumatology clinic and ask for cancellations and also ask your GP to put in a word to say you are coping with ET already and your wait for rheumatology is making things worse. I find I have to keep nagging (nicely) to get anywhere with the NHS just now - saying that my haem was quick off the mark this time! Hope you feel better again soon, go back to GP and ask for more iron if you are allowed. It is worth it to feel better for Christmas. All the best for a better-feeling Christmas and the same for 2015. Best wishes Aime x PS you can have a hissy fit or sound off at any time you want - cos I know it makes a difference to me when I let off steam to someone who understands. x

Hi Aime,

Thanks for letting me sound off! Will be doing some telephoning in the new year! I was meant to be seen before the start of December and did phone but their waiting lists are far behind schedule. I pity anyone else in a worse off position than me. I hope you have a healthy and happy 2015! A toast to good health!
