I have PV and have been on hydroxy for 3 years and this has been controlling my bloods. However, after research here and elsewhere I decided to see if my diet could help. I have been on an anti inflammatory diet for about 12 months and have also included regular curcumin. For 3 successive blood tests my platelet levels decreased and my hydroxy dose was gradually reduced. This week my platelets have more than doubled to 697. The only thing I have done differently is that I forgot my tablets when I went away for a weekend 3 weeks ago so missed 2 tablets, but took a double dose when I got home (so 1 tablet less in total). I also took the opportunity to switch to taking my hydroxy and asprin at night instead of morning.
Has anyone else had a sudden platelet increase like this? (All other bloods fine) any suggestions?

Platelet levels can vary over time due to other illness/infections. Different laboratories and analytical techniques can also produce different results. A single unusual result does not necessarily mean there has been a change in your PV. That said it would be worth speaking to your haematologist about getting another test done.
Hard to say based on a single read. Could be a case of reactive thrombocytosis or even just a random fluctuation as out levels can rise and fall periodically. Hope you next lab is more reassuring.
Thanks. I am not aware of anything which could have caused it, but I will ask for a second test -I dont feel comfortable just doubling up the hydroxy again and waiting another 3 months. As you say, there could be another cause.
Makes sense to get another lab done. Don't double up doses on HU. it is a toxic med and you do not want to create more problems than you solve. Here is the missed dose instruction from ePocrates.
What happens if I miss a dose? Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.
