Bless you I know exactly how you feel. I have mixed mechanism Glaucoma- both open and closed angle. I also have chronic migraine. Mainly without aura but occasionally with. I’m currently on Candesartan for the chronic migraines. It seems to me that most of the migraine prevention meds aren’t suitable to take with Glaucoma. I had a chat with the pharmacist at my Drs surgery about migraine meds & Glaucoma and she said that most of the time the leaflets in the meds are a warning rather than a definitely don’t take. My consultant said that I would be fine on a low dose Amitriptyline so maybe have a chat with your consultant? You are not alone though with migraines so don’t despair. There is always hope. Take care 😊.
Thanks, it's reassuring to know someone else is in the same boat . But scary . I think I should trust the g.p. but over the phone consultation are not the same, and you never speak to the same one twice.. I feel a bit like I am fobbed off.
Suggest that you actually contact the Migraine Centre directly and ask for a consultation with one of the doctors there - you don't need a referral - and they are focused on migraine treatments - they may not know the answer initially but are in a better position to point you in the right direction.nationalmigrainecentre.org.uk/
Sorry you are dealing with all of this. I would suggest you ask to see a Neuro-Opthomologist they specialize in brain related eye issues. The question is what is the cause of your migraines? Is it the Glaucoma or something else. So if your eye pressure is high and that is the cause then the eye condition needs to be treated and that should make the migraines go away. I know I make it sound easy and I know it is not.
I would suggest magnesium as a preventative. I have been told by a number of Neurologist that it needs to be taken at a high dose. For me I have to take it 3x a day. But it has really helped to reduce the pain level and frequency.
There are about 5 or 6 types of magnesium. I started with Citrate and gave it more than 3 months and it didn't help so I changed to magnesium glycinate. This has been a game changer for me.
I also take Feverfew which I believe is also helping.
I've got narrow angle glaucoma and the angles are now completely closed, but this has not been a factor in the aura migraine I used to get all the time, sometimes 3 or 4 a day. I changed my diet 4 years back for another reason, and it meant cutting out dairy, especially cheese. So I found out by accident that, if I don't eat cheese (and I don't drink dairy milk either, don't know how much difference that's made), I don't get any aura migraine, it's gone. But if I eat cheese, say a cheese sandwich two days running, I will get an aura migraine - I tested it to see. So its entirely possible the cause of your aura migraine is nothing to do with your glaucoma.
The other thing is, although many drugs can raise pressure in the eyes, they don't always do it, it depends on the individual. Most anti cholinergic drugs can do it, but I've had one or two and they've not raised my pressures, although they were not taken long term. Maybe that's why he wants you to try the amitriptyline, to see if it does have that effect, because it may not.
Thank you bamboo , it's one long worry seems if it's not one thing ,it's another . Wish medics could agree on what they prescribed. And read your notes before they do ,feel like a guinea pig. Really fed up and worried.
