Weird Aural Migraines.

Hi, greetings from the PMR group.👍

Had aural migraines from about age 14 and maybe 2 or 3 a year and lasted quite a few hours with awful headache to follow. Had them on and off till now, 73, maybe averaging a few every year. Well in the last 6 days I've had five, each lasted only 20 minutes and not much of a headache after. Wondering if my having Covid19 a couple of weeks back may have been the cause. Any ideas whether this is normal, long lasting or any prognosis appreciated.

What are aural migraines , are they the same as vestibular ?

They're the ones with the flashing patterns, most commonly known as migraine with aura. Nothing like vestibular.

Hello there,I too have had migraines since I was around 14 sometimes very frequently (during my first pregnancy) sometimes going months/ a couple of years without any.I am now on an everyday preventative (a combination of 20mg amitriptyline and 50mg atenonol a day) which works well.I do still get the aura, like you lasting 20 mins to half an hour. Many times that's all I get,but sometimes get a very mild headache afterwards. Alot of my headaches were hormonal so they became milder and more infrequent after the menopause, but trouble with my thyroid(another hormone) brought them back and that's when I started first proprananol now changed to atenonol alongside my amitriptyline.

I do still sometimes get the aura, like you once, twice sometimes 3x in one day,or on a few consecutive days.Mainly if I've been stressed, perhaps not slept well or missed a meal. This hot close weather is not good for me either.

I am grateful that my medication seems to be controlling them.

Covid could be the cause, maybe not sleeping or eating as well, being extra tired etc.Anything that disrupts my routine can cause it.Hopefully this will settle down for you and is just a glitch.

If it continues, maybe check with a doctor, just to rule out anything else.Or maybe an optician. Wishing you well.

Great reply thx. Pregnancy and menopause apart, seem like similar to me. Think stress and covid are my main triggers.

GP has given me 6 sumatriptan tablets. Not sure about these so will only take them if the migraines don't desist.

I have taken triptans in the past ,but they gave me the most excruciatingly painful rebound headaches,so I stopped. If you can manage with over the counter painkillers, and the headache is just mild I would advise you not to take them.Of course it is up to you,but that was my experience. Wishing you well.

I have taken Zolmitriptan for some years. I limit myself to 3 in one week though. Once I neglected this though and then I got awful rebound headaches. I had to go cold turkey which was bad but since then I've been careful and been OK. I rarely get aural ones though. At one time I could have counted the times and places when I had them and there were several years apart. They'd last probably 30 minutes and though I'd rest for a bit but there was never pain with them. I get them more now, maybe a few a year, but my migraines in general have been a lot more frequent since I had a car accident a year ago where I broke my neck. I'm seeing a neurologist next week to see if they are a result of the accident. (private appointment paid for insurance company dealing with claim following accident, NHS waiting list is a year!)
