I wanted to let people know about the success I've had after my first Aimovig injection. I self injected on September 19 (my first of two free samples). I've only taken three Amerge (for migraine) since. The first two Amerge were during the first four days after the shot, but they say it takes 6 days for the full benefit to kick in. The last Amerge I took was October 1, and it was more of a headachey feeling that was causing me to take too much Excedrin and ibuprofen. So I took a pill. I'm over the moon ecstatic. Plus, I don't constantly have that headachey and neck achey feeling I've lived with for 30 years. I hope it works for others too. I thought I should describe my headaches in case anyone sounds similar. I normally average 18 Amerge per month plus countless aspirin-free Excedrin. I have enough scoliosis to cause constant muscle strain in my upper back and trapezius muscles. I'm constantly stretching the sides of my neck. So there is constant muscle and nerve simulation in that area. I think the nerve thing is a huge part of it. The best ways for me to get a migraine in less than a minute is to wear a hat, or necklace, or scarf, or racer-back anything. The nerves are overstimulated and can't take any more. The Excedrin takes care of most daily tension type headaches. But when it fails I know to take Amerge. I also get a menstrual migraine either before or after my period. Amerge doesn't help with that one. I just deal with it for two days. But I didn't have that migraine this month either. I'll use my second injection October 19. For those who don't know, Aimovig is new. It's the first med that sort of insulates the stuff that causes the blood vessels to dilate. So the usual triggers don't trigger. Twice I've had a couple of cocktails.... No migraine. I actually had a glass of red wine with dinner... No migraine. I can sit in less than a ram-rod straight position without getting a headache. I can even rest my head against the side of the chairback and not get a migraine. This is all huge for me. I haven't tried a hat or scarf yet lol. I'm enjoying feeling normal too much to really test it. Sorry this is so long. I'll update after month two. One more thing...a few times I felt like I was trying to get a migraine but rubbing my ibuprofen gel on sides of neck or taking Advil or Excedrin made it go away. Normally when the sides of the neck inflame it's all over.

UPDATE: today is Nov 30. I've had three injections starting Sept 19. I've only taken six Amerge (triptan) during that time. Ibuprofen is generally enough for me now if migraine starts to occur. I could not be happier. I did start to get a menstrual migraine in October (they come on hard and fast). Amerge usually doesn't phase those, but that time one Amerge and some ice and ibuprofen took care of it. :)

Update 12/23/18. Realized today that I haven't taken any Amerge for SIX WEEKS.

Hello headache queen!

Thanks for posting the good news. So glad that you are not experiencing all those migraines. Waiting for my neuro to let me know when available in Canada. I have chronic migraines with aura. I also have scoliosis - never made the connections. Thanks for that. Will check that out with neuro ... hope!

Side effects may include irritation around injection site (I had none) and constipation (I'm fine if I drink a lot of water).

Go to Aimovig.com and see if you can still get two free trial injections. Take the info to your doc. It may save you some time. Each injection is $500 (monthly), so the free trial is great. They also have a program that will mostly pay for five injections per year, but you can't apply the costs toward your insurance deductible if you use that program. Best of luck to you.
