New type. Of migraine

I've had migraine since I was 30, I'm 64 now, but recently I'm experiencing a different kind of pain, it starts in the right hand side of my neck at the back of my head, then radiates up my cheek, eye and then my temple, it feels like a nerve pain. Had anyone else had this? Thanks

Maybe it's trigeminal neuralgia? Sorry I don't know anything about it really other than it's sharp often short lived pain particularly effecting the face (the trigeminal nerve). It can come in waves and can be kind of continous but still it described as sharp shock like pain?

Thankyou for your reply, I will read up on that, I haven't heard of it before.

It's not particularly common but my friends father has it so I assume it's not rare either?

Sounds like a cervicogenic headache, which originates in the neck. I get both migraines and cervicogenic headaches, and they are both awful. Hope you feel better soon!

It is best to see a qualified doctor so they do scan / x-ray to rule out/in any problems with your upper cervical spine. In the meantime, I suggest you apply Volini / Voltaren gel in the area where the pain started asap, and if possible apply some ice after that.

Thankyou for your reply and advice, I'm going to contact my neurologist tomorrow to see if I can have a scan or xray. I'll try the gel too, thankyou

Hi Mary. I’ve had a similar thing. I started from a little girl until about ten years or more ago with terrible migraines. Luckily I didn’t get them all the time like some people do but they were very bad. I stopped now having them but occasionally I wake in the morning with a miserable headache. It makes your neck feel taught. It lasts for days. I usually take a Naramig tablet which I had given me when my migraines were really bad. I found I felt better within the hour. But the tablets make you feel drowsy. I’ve had this bad head for a few days so I thought I would take my tablet but when I got to get them I found they went out of date in December. So it’s back to paracetamol. It’s not a really bad head buts it’s niggly. I know the Naramig puts it right. I’m now 80.

Hi mavary, thankyou for your reply, my mum also had migraines till she was 80. It sounds similar to what I have, that you're experiencing. The Naramig does take it off for a while but then it returns. I have chronic migran e and having injections now. Trouble is, they don't recommend triptans as you get older, but it's a shame when they work. Hope you soon feel better x

Thank you I’m lucky that when mine goes it doesn’t come back till the next time. The Dr told me it’s cluster headaches I’m getting now. I get this about once or twice a year. It just makes me feel groggy for a few days.

Hi Mary. I asked my Dr yesterday for Naramig and he was putting a prescription out for me. Maybe your Mum is more frail than I am because they do affect you.

Hi mavary I'm so pleased you were able to get the naramig, I had a bad migraine yesterday and would have really suffered if I hadn't had them. Take care x

Well done. I never found anything else that worked. My headache is better now thankfully. I had it for four or five days.
