Menstrual migraines

I’m posting on behalf of my long suffering sister. She has monthly menstrual migraines just like my mum used to have. Can anyone advise me if stopping her periods will stop her migraines. Once my mum had completed her menopause her migraines stopped.

Is there a particular drug that is used to stop the period in relation to this or is there a natural remedy that could help her. She is at her wits end as she is now suffering with sinus pain too.

Any advice would be welcome

Thank you xxx

you can try going on the pill and that works for some people but it doesn't work for everyone - and the pill can have it's own side-effects. It didn't help me but my migraines are triggered by both changes in hormones so it just ended up being permanent migraine.

Hi Delphin,

I too suffer from menstrual migraine which started when I was 39 and have become progressively worse as I have reached menopause, I am now 50. I had tried various treatments but nothing worked and some things made them worse. I recently visited Professor Anne MacGregor in Harley Street who specialises I’m hormonal migraine and she was a revelation. From my first email to her she was very supportive and provided lots of information and advice. Since my consultation she has contacted my GP with instructions for new medication which she is confident will stop my migraines. It is very early days for me but for the first time in years I feel positive. Look her up on the internet and see what you think.

I now take fovratriptan for my menstrual migraines and it helps a lot. I also just started topomax about 2 months ago but not sure if it's helping yet as a preventative.

I used to get awful menstural migraines until I went on the progesterone only pill. It stops your periods completely, thus stopping the headaches. I’ve been on it for 9 years- it’s the best thing I ever did!
