Coil for menstrual migraines?

Has anyone tried or had any success with having a coil fitted to stop menstrual migraines? I'm really nervous about trying anything like that but migraines have been appalling for the last 6 months...

Hi Cat00, I haven't gotten a coil, but I do use birth control pills regularly for my migraines. I skip the placebo pills to avoid the drop in hormones each month bc the trigger a huge migraine. It's been a huge benefit for me. It's a monophasic pill, which means it's the same level of hormone, so there are no up and downs. Hope that helps!

Thank you for the reply!

Unfortunately I tried being on a continuous pill for 9 months but it didn't make any difference? But that was before I had children, ever since my periods started again after having my son it's been awful and the menstrual ones don't respond to triptans at all....boooooo!

Just got a coil this year for my migraines, my main trigger being hormonal changes, I get them pre period, during, after, then a gap, then ovulation migraine, then another couple of days gap, then the cycle continues. Have had the mirena for 6 months and it has definitely helped reduce the frequency. No huge side effects either, and wasn’t a problem having it inserted. I was very scared too and wish I had tried it sooner. So I would highly recommend giving it a try, good luck :-)

That's good to know! It never occurred to me I could be having ovulation migraines as well I'll have to look at my charts. I get so many these days, I had 16 days of migraine in the last 22 days and if one more person tells me it's weather I'll throttle them!

I made the mistake of searching the coil on healthunlocked at saw loads of posts with people having problems which obviously is not surprising on a forum like this, so it's great to hear a good experience.

It would be great to know how you get on with it in the future with it?

Weather is a trigger for me too, but totally understand how annoying people telling you what your triggers are is :-). The national migraine center are very helpful too, so highly recommend them. I get botox as a preventative too, but hopefully will be able to just use the coil once my periods have stopped. I also take 400mg B2, magnesium malate (biocare),b12, feverfew and vitamin d daily and started to eat an almost vegan diet (I have some egg and some dairy if it’s easier), tried being fully vegan and it didn’t make a difference, but almost vegan is better for my brain than being an omnivore . Tried cbd oil, curcumin, and coq10 but they didn’t help. Also used cefaly for a while and do think that helped me, and now use it when I have a bad attack. I have reduced my migraines from daily (following a concussion) to 25 days a month, to now about 12-15. So slowly chipping away. Fingers crossed for you too :-)

Blimey you've had it rough! I've been having Botox for a few years and it did until recently halve my migraine frequency. I've tried at least 13 drugs, although have been put on new one 3 days ago, which is novel!

Tried feverfew, accunptcure etc. Quite jaded really but then i have other chronic health problems to deal with too....

Good luck with your chipping away, you've obviously got some fight in you! ........ugh really trying to use fewer exclamation marks but it seems appropriate here.
