feeling unreal

Hi first time on forum

This is a question on behalf of my son. He is 14 and has had Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome since ha was 3 years old. In the last couple of years it has changed into a more abdominal migraine picture (without the vomiting and with more headaches) However he is now describing more and more often a sence of things beeing "unreal"(depersonalization). He used to have these feelings lasting for a couple of hours and I think they were more like an aura, but now it carries on for days. We have spoken to the GP about it and she has ref him to the CAMHS team. Has anybody had experiences of this and is there anything he can do about it?

thank you

Roslin

Hi Roslin,

yes, I often get the sense of feeling 'unreal'. A bit like I am watching everything but not part of it. Is this what your son gets? For me it is part and parcel of depression.

Yes that is how he describes it. I know it can be part of depression but he has in the past mentioned it just before he had his CVS. He used to have a lot of other personality changes when he was very young. He has also at the moment got shingles and is in a lot of pain so maybe it is not surprising if he is depressed. He says that he isn't though but I think he gets very anxious. I may be clutching at straws a bit

I've had brief moments of not feeling all here during or just before migraine. Objects sometimes look odd eg my fingers can look huge to me, and the world develops a strange grey film over it like I'm looking through it. Also suffer from chronic pain which can make you feel like that too, not to mention affecting your mood. It's good that the GP has made the referral to the CAHMS team as they will be able to make an assessment and provide support if necessary. They have helped members of my family in the past.

Hope you get things sorted out.
