Chronic Migraines & antidepressants

blue-green-purple profile image

I take rizatriptan & botox injections for migraines and I'm down to approximately 9 a month. I also have major depression disorder & multiple anxieties. I was able to tolerate antidepressants for many years but after trying TMS, I became extremely medication sensitive and had to stop taking antidepressants but I can still take diazepam for anxiety.

I am extremely depressed and need to try once again to see if I will be able to tolerate the meds but I am not very hopeful considering my past history with medication.

It seems like anything I do or take for depression relief causes severe migraines & other symptoms. Nothing stops the pain but waiting it out, not even migraine meds.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience. If so, has anyone found a solution that treats both successfully? I am desperate for relief. Doctors, therapists, treatments, I am running out of options and money. I really need help to get get through this. Something to hope for.

Thanks for reading and thanks for any thoughts on this subject.

I am so sorry you are in this situation.

What has worked so well for me is high doses of Magnesium glycinate 3x a day amd Feverfew.

I have been doing this for over 3 years and it really helps me. I know each person is different but here is what works for me:

As soon as I feel the pain start I treat it.

I take 2 over the counter migraine drugs and drink a cold Pepsi.

Sometimes this stops the pain. If it does not then I move on to one pill immatrix at a higher dose( most.people startnat 50mg, I take 100mg).. I wait 30 minutes if I still do not have relief then I use an injectable Imitrix drug to help cure the pain.

If that doesn't work, I go to the hospital. I have not had a hospital visit in over 3 years doing this.

What I have learned is these tools help.a lot:

I use ice for my Back and neck area in case the pain is there.

I drink hot peppermint tea or roll peppermint oil on the back of my hands and take deep breaths with it.

I make sure I am in a quiet space with not a lot of light.

I know my migraines are also connected to sleep so have you had a sleep study or do you know if sleep is involved?

I have learned a lot from the Podcast- Heads Up.

I hope you can find relief from migraines.

Best to you!

Wish I could help you in some way but I don’t share the same issues that you do. The Botox injections 4X year do the most good. Beyond that I use Imitrex for the 2-3 headaches I have a week. This is a huge improvement from the daily chronic migraines I had before. I truly hope you can get some relief from your headaches. They can make you life miserable.

All the best,

Joanne

I use exercise to help my chronic anxiety and CGRP antibody for the migraines. I would definitely be depressed if I was taking lots of diazepam, the half life on that is 4 days. I'm an insomniac and take it occasionally to help me sleep but it effects my mental health if I have a couple of days in a row.
