I'm 81 years old and started taking fluoxetine around 1995 and stopped taking it (I didn't think I needed it any more and if I did I'd just start taking it again) in April of 2022. I was prescribed fluoxetine because of a problem I had with anger. Every once in a while my wife would say something that would set me off. I would get very angry (but not violent) with no warning. Somehow I thought this anger was justified. After the anger came depression which lasted a day or so. After that I was fine until the next time.

After starting fluoxetine I no longer had problems with anger.

After stopping I was fine for about 4 months and I'd thought that any effects of fluoxetine were long gone.

But then my wife said something to me of no consequence and I had the most extreme outburst ever. I ran around the house screaming and pounding on things (but somehow being careful not to hurt anything, it was a very strange; I was both a witness and a participant). After the outburst came depression and a strange dizziness.

Then over the next (almost) two years came series of various antidepressants, many of which seemed to help for a month or so but no long term help from pharma.

My current symptoms include dizziness, a fuzzy brain and a strange feeling that I'm not in the right place. The very strange thing about my symptoms is that they don't start until I've been up in the morning for 2 hours or so. Then it's weird the rest of the day.

My own diagnosis is ADS - antidepressant discontinuation syndrome. How long can it last?

Hi hun, I guess you've tried the obvious like stop, take five deep breaths and put things in perspective. The important thing is you want to be different and not just make an excuse for your behaviour, so never give up trying, who knows something like changing your diet might help, or changing your daily routine adding more challenging mental activities.

But what is probably most important is getting a complete medical checkout to rule out obvious disorders that could impact your quality of life.

Unfortunately life can rarely be changed by taking a pill, but they can sometimes help to live life the way you want to live it, focusing on what's good and fortunate to have. We can all say the wrong things at times, you can't take them back, but the rest of the time can say the right things offering love and support.I

Beating yourself up with guilt is not going to help and when sincere apologies aren't helping get help with your relationships before you lose them.
