As a job coach I was sent to support an individual working in the kitchen. His job was to wash dishes. My job was to watch him work and help him should he need it, but it was crystal clear from the first week that he didn’t want me there and would bark at me, make mean looking faces at me, and was generally rude to me whenever I tried to say anything to help him out. I had to stand in place for several hours only to watch him work and couldn’t do anything. A little over a year of my time that could of been put to much better use lol

What was one of your worst job experiences you remember having?

I worked in a group home years ago in my early 20's. It was a home of 8 adults severely mentally ill adults who needed 24 hour supervision. Staff slept in in the office on the couch and locked themselves in. I learned a lot about mental illness on the job and planned to move ahead toward a graduate degree. I was house manager and the director took lots of time away to Hawaii consistently to care for problems with his land.. then there were case managers and we were down staff. I had to do consistent sleep overs and I was completely burnt out after 6 years. I would be there 5-6 nights in a row consistently.
If anyone has been truly burnt out you know you lose a bit of yourself and your emotions go a bit haywire... tears...anger.. depression...and ...
when he came back I was about to flip out so I decided that's it, I'm gone. I called him outside, laid into him and told him I've had it. No support. I flipped. I was severely burnt out and was crying hysterically. He didn't expect me to say "I quit". I gave the appropriate 3 week notice and left without a job. Not what I was taught to do. He was shocked!!
🛑 HELLO 🛑I was literally out of my mind and in need of a break. This has gone on too long without support. He should've taken care of his "right hand" or said "thank you"! You take care of your staff or you lose them.🙋
I left and took a month off before I even started looking. I soon found another job which was a day job in a clinic. I was thrilled I had quit.
Lesson to others:. Don't let others swipe your mental health on the job, I don't care who they are. People get taken advantage of too much. There are other jobs available...if you put your nose to the grindstone you can find another job quick..
Don't let your mental health be hijacked! 🤯

Agreed! Wow!! Well, what would you expect when your boss goes off gallivanting in Hawaii and leaves his staff overworked and under appreciated. You did the right thing look after yourself and ended things. I empathize because I currently work in a group home since the Covid. If it was any other time it wouldn’t be as stressful, but because of the virus I have to take extra precautions and not only think of them, but also myself and my loved ones. It’s tough and I try to find any little window to wind down. This one individual is bossy as heck. He wants to be treated like a king lol Thanks for sharing your story 😊
You work in a group home currently? What type of individuals? Please do self care...it's a burn out job.
Thanks for sharing your story also!☺️
I was working in road construction it was a 3 man gang.I had been working one day and the boss told me I was being laid off due to them working as a 2 man team from now on.about a week later I saw the work van with 3 in it but thought nothing of it then a guy in the pub said my job was given to a mutual friend as he had a serious court appearance and by providing a pay slip and evidence he might not go to jail and that was what happened.days later he quit the job.I spent day/night working sometime 30 hours digging in rain sleet and snow just to be treated that way.
