I have been on venelafaxine for a few years now. I was wondering what symptoms/side effects people have had if they miss a dose. It seems that recently my missed dose side effects are worse that what they used to be. (I’d like to add that this doesn’t happen often!)
Also is anyone aware if it affects their blood sugar levels?

Hi, I take Ven. yes, a missed does makes me feel a bit strange, but a friend of mine if she misses a dose she has uncontrollable crying fits that day, I would imagine taking it again the next day will soon set you right again. No sugar level issues that I am aware of, but I may look into it as that can affect mood. Take care.
Missing the odd medication, take it when you remember you have not taken it,
If you forget for the day get back onto the routine next day. Missing a day if it is uncommon should make no difference. It can also depend what time of day you take your medications.
Sometimes I miss my medications, I take them generally with food, if I miss a medication I will take it at the next mealtime or even supper.
You will be ok whatever you decide, if you have been on them for a long time there will be a buildup of the drug in the body.
The only medications I had in the past was my Opiates, these drugs have been reduced now so my doses are getting lower, however if I feel jumpy that is the sign I need to take the drug I missed. to control any withdrawal, now a very rare situation to be in
I'm on 375mg venlafaxine, a drug which is known to have a really laow shelf life. I start to experience the full blown withdrawal symptoms within a few hours. Shaking, twitching, giddy, tearful.......
As for sugars, I'm diabetic so my ups and downs don't really follow a pattern.
If you suffer withdrawal by not taking medications . Take the drug. If I am going out shopping etc I have some Opiates in the car, My AD medications sit on Hazels coffee table so I do not forget my medications.
Suffering diabetes myself, my drugs have not any affect on that condition, if I have problem with diabetes I have a piece of chocolate to settle myself down, a couple of squares seems to work for me.
Regard my AD medication, they do not affect my Diabetes, no trouble there. However during the day we eat a lot of fruit, we are still eating last years apples so I do not know if large amounts of fruit effects my Diabetes
You miss the drug, take it as soon as possible, yes withdrawal is nasty, that gives a good incentive not to forget taking your medications
Lol, I had to smile, I never intentionally miss a dose, but I have forgotten them or somehow they've been missed out in my morning box.
I take 22 different drugs a day, they are all in measured doses in boxes for the time of day, I've reached a stage in life where I've gone beyond skipping meds. Not worth the hassle! I do occasionally get it wrong though!
You are like me, I have an extensive collection of medications to take although at this time they are reducing the number and dose of my medications because of my age.
My problem at the moment is my short term memory so my Wife looks after my medications, she also sorts out my medications she even orders them for me as well.
We all get things wrong sometimes, when sorting them into day packs sometimes a one is missed out, however we normally manage to correct the error.
To be honest I can never remember the names of the drugs I take or the actual dose, all down to the Wife. Wonderful things to have, keeps me on straight and narrow lol
Hi Bob, snap! My husband helps me sort out my meds., and as for my memory.....well better not going there!
I'm dreading a time when the dose of meds is reduced now, but know that as I get older the quacks will want to reduce the doses.
At the moment, I'm sat up in bed at silly o'clock with one hand driving me insane.....excema, listening to the not so gentle snoring of my better half!
My age is near seventy and that is why they try and reduce my medications.
Memory concerns can be caused by your Anxiety.
I took delivery of four medications I was waiting for, one was an Opiate that can cause problems on script they need two signatures to release them,
One problem I am finding is some drugs if not on repeat can be hard to supply, so sometimes you need to have a reserve supply, I had too wait three weeks to get my pain medications so trying to reduce the dose on advice of your Doctor can help you to help yourself.
For Excema, try Aquatious Cream in your bath and E45 does keep the moisture in the skin
Hello labaker, I'm not a doctor but one missed dose will cause no harm at all. Obviously any advice partly depends on dosage and to give you some indication I take 150 mgm per day once a day. I have missed my daily dosage a few times sometimes two days at once and never had any bad effects. As I understand it the level in your body will stand this sort of fluctuation easily, after all who is to say my dosage should not really be 116 and a half mgm per day or going the other way 177 and a quarter mgm per day. The dip or rise over one day will soon be made up .
I can't help on blood sugar , i know nothing ( although I'm not from Barcelona), except I always have breakfast as I know blood sugar level drops at night as even I can't eat in my sleep.
My overall feeling from very long experience of depression is that you probably owe more to your own inner strength and will continue to do so ,more than any drugs. The medics give us the best drugs they know to help us but you are a far more important factor than any drugs. The medical profession are still a long way from knowing what type of drugs and which drugs and in what dosage are needed to cope with depression. But it is what it is, you can't expect more than to get their best efforts until more is known. Luckily we have a pretty dedicated bunch of medics who always do their best and we can't ask for more until more is known.
I wish you all the best and am sure you are a typical human and will find far more strength than you ever knew you had and that will be enough. But get back to your regular dose asap as all outside help is also welcome. Don't worry about temporary side effects, you're doing well enough to counter the frontal effects, and I'm sure you'll continue to do so.
I’ve been on venlafaxine (Effexor) for over 12 years. I take my medication first thing in the morning... if I miss a dose I remember immediately by noon because I will start to get withdrawal symptoms. Nausea, sweats, head ache, overly emotional... and just an overall awful feeling. I’ve only missed it a handful of times during the 12 years and they were terrible experiences. When discontinuing this medication you must taper off in increments because stopping right away can cause debilitating withdrawal symptoms
Hi....I've been on Venlafaxine for many years and whenever I miss a dose, beside from feeling terrible I have always gotten "shock like" zaps over my entire body. A common side affect from it.
I used to be on venlafaxine, started to get zappy mild-electric-shock sensations at least a couple of hours before the next dose was due. Sudden twitches not good so I talked to my GP, who agreed to reduce it very slowly. I ended up having to cut tablets in quarters but did manage to stop after about 3 months, moved to another antidepressant.
