How do you know if you have a mental health problem?

I don't know if something is wrong with me or not- I have days were I feel utterly depressed and worthless, and days were I feel great and really sociable and happy. I thought I might have bipolar disorder, but sometimes my feelings/episodes fluctuate in the space of an hour. I am recently turned 16, and this has been going on for about 3 years, ever since my mum got seriously ill. When she did, as I am naturally not a quiet but closeted person, I didn't speak to anyone about my feelings. She is better now, has been for the last 1 and a half years, and I don't know why I still have these dramatic mood swings. I keep on telling myself I am being stupid and its just hormones at most, but no one else in my class or year etc. seems to feel or act like this! I am super confused so any help would be really appreciated xx

Hi Ellekc and welcome to this caring forum. I am sorry to hear things are so difficult for you at the moment. The feelings/episodes you are experiencing could be, as you say, due to hormones which do often fluctuate at your age, which may, in turn, cause this. It is good to hear your Mum is now better. This was clearly a difficult time for you. You mentioned in your post that you didn't speak to anyone about your feelings when your Mum was ill. Do you feel able to do this now? Could you talk to a trusted family member, friend, or school counselling service about how you are feeling? I feel that this may help you. If you don't feel comfortable about this, you may like to write down how you are feeling. Sometimes, people find this easier. I am guessing that you now have exams and this often causes us to feel more anxious. You mentioned that no one in your class or year is experiencing this, but we are all different and react differently to situations. Please feel reassured by this. We are unable to make a diagnosis on the forum, but it may help you to make an appointment to see your family doctor to discuss your concerns. He /She will be able to arrange some help and support if this is needed. Please be reassured that you are not alone and stay on the forum to receive support from other members. Are any forum members able to help and support Ellekc, please? Thank you and best wishes.

Every day is different, it's natural for a lot of people to have good days and bad days, ups next downs.

I wish I had good days every day but that's just not how life goes.

What makes a good day for you?

in reply to

Doing nothing makes me depressed so I must do something...

in reply to

Yes, you need to keep busy and do things, fill your mind with things that you do, if you focus on things then they can help you to have good thoughts.

Are anything a that interest you?

in reply to

I draw everyday and make some stuff 😄

I would say go and see a doctor!!! I have not long been diagnosed with bipolar 1 ,when I'm low it lasts about 8months and my highs only last 1 or 2months but some people have rapid cycling where they can be fine one minute and low the next,I got it a few years ago when I nearly lost my daughter, that was really traumatic for me and I still can't talk about it now so I suggest you do see a doctor and I hope he says it's hormonal as I wouldn't wish this illness on anyone xxx

Hi Elle,I don't know if your aware but a lot of hospitals do a walk in A&E for mental health just go online sweatheart and find out where they are that way you will have 1,someone who understands and 2 it's private, they are Fabulouse, at least that way your asking advise from someone who knows, wherever you live I'm assuming it's the uk there is one not far from you, best of luck.

Hello ElleKc there are some good techniques in DBT and CBT which help take the sting out of troubling thoughts and feelings.. I wish I had come across the techniques when younger, as it's difficult to change the way I engage with disturbing thoughts now..

Kati Morton published some brilliant mental health vidoes on YouTube, giving lots of relatable advice, well worth browsing her vids.
