So I somehow decided to get into running… and my long distance is now up to about 13 miles. But this week… I got back from my run to find an unexpected injury!!
Fortunately it doesn’t hurt but when I came home to shower I found blood in my underwear!! It seems the end of my cock was rubbing and the stitch marks on my cock have bled a little!!! This is 18 months after surgery!!
I’m wondering whether long distance running just does this and I need to put anti chaffing cream “everywhere” rather than just on my thighs! Or whether I should be a little concerned and consult my GP or perhaps the surgeon for an opinion.
Any thoughts gratefully appreciated!!

I've heard of penile frost bite but not penile running injuries! If the bleeding doesn't stop or the abrasion doesn't heal quickly, you'd be wise to go to your GP.Do you wear athletic underwear to keep everything in place when you run? They are usually made out of slinky synthetic material that reduces friction. Seamless underwear is also kinder to circumcised men.
Realistically without the protective covering of the foreskin, men circumcised as infants or as adults can face chafing problems. It's just part of the deal but the right underwear and some type of topical treatment (vaseline etc) will help reduce friction and avoid issues.
Was a shock to me too!! Minor and no pain… but not what you want to find!!
I tend to wear a supportive jock for running… but thinking I need to pick a better “moisture wicking” one and with a better fabric for my longer runs!! Never had this from 5k runs!! But I guess as I’m increasing the distance it’s a risk!
Well, first of all congrats on the 13 miles. That is half a marathon, and it is very respectable. After I was all healed up from my surgery I noticed that where I had my stitches now I have like a raised edge. By just looking at it you cannot really see it, but when you touch it, you can feel it. It is slowly but surely going away. I got my surgery back in September. I have noticed that when I play basketball or workout doing squats that area gets very sensitive. It doesn't hurt, but I can see that if I continue the workouts for too long it can probably bleed. If that is your case, I do not think it is anything serious at all. As long as is nothing deep. I would try wearing compression underwear for those long runs. And neosporin can probably help with the healing.
Thanks bud - it wasn’t bleeding by time I took off my underwear… but clearly it had absorbed blood… so I think it’s pretty minor. But is clearly on stitch marks from 18 months ago.
My worry is I’m running a marathon in a few weeks… and I need to find a way to make sure this doesn’t happen as the runs get longer… or it might hurt… and might be a bigger injury!
you have had some replies from the guys on here but if you are still worried I would advise you to discuss it with your GP for a medical opinion and advice. It always pays to err on the side of caution.
You’d think!! I guess if have had chafing anyway… never run this far before!! But given I’ve got another 14 miles to increase by I’m keen to sort this now!
Am guessing that scar is just a little weaker than surrounding skin so it took the hit!! Everything will be well oiled next time!! 🤣
Cmon - it’s a fair point!! I couldn’t keep a bandage on post surgery… let alone on a marathon. 🤣 everything down there keeps changing shape and size so it falls off!
I'm uncut, but occasionally on a long run if the old helmet exposed itself I'd get sore. Solution #1 was vaseline, which was not a lot of use. Solution #2 was to wear budgie smugglers so it didn't move around. This worked.
Thanks bud. Covered everything (and I mean everything) in chamois butter this morning for my 5k and wore some kinder fabric! It’s the long runs that are the problem… but I’m marathon training! I need to get a way through this!
Not worth the diversion then if you're into a routine. I do know some people who run to parkrun, then do that typically at a higher pace, then run home to finish off their run. On the soreness, I wore the budgie smugglers, and by stopping everything moving around they worked for me. I was doing 80-90m a week at the time.
At some point I suggest you move the long run to be on the day of your target marathon. Best wishes, Gary
Thanks buddy - marathon is a Sunday… so close enough. I can easily to short runs on weekdays before work… but a two hour plus run doesn’t mix well with a school day!!
Budgie smugglers are an interesting idea… might yet try that! If a tight soft fabric jock doesn’t do the job!!
I was a long distance runner and when running the less restrictive clothing the better I only wore the liner in my running short and never had issues with rubbing at that point make sure things are not to snug !
I tried that once on a 5k run… never again!! I guess we each are very different on such things!! I need everything held in place!! Far too much swinging around and very distracting and uncomfortable!
