Circumcision, stitch separation?

Hi all.

5 days after the surgery now. Still swollen etc etc but today is the first day that I’ve been able to see the actual stitches. It looks like the incision is healing well apart from the bit in the photograph where it seems to me a stitch has been missed / pulled and there is a gap.

Is this something to worry about? Will this sort itself out over time? I’d also appreciate if someone could tell me the ‘type’ of cut I’ve had.

Hi Man, it should be ok it's a part of the healing process I wouldn't worry about it just take it easy. It will take its course you could wash with some salt water and keep everything clean it looks to be a low and tight cut.

I think it looks OK and there’s a healthy scab formed on it so you shouldn’t worry too much unless it starts deteriorating.

I had nine stitches so they were spaced apart and in one area I had an open gap where I could see white tissue underneath. It didn’t get inflamed or septic so I left it and gradually over a week or so the gap closed without any difference in the scar at that point.

Obviously watch it like you would any other cut on the body and seek medical help if there’s any bad signs (inflammation, pus, persistent bleeding etc).

Thanks, I’m thinking that this is what is happening. It looks to me like there were quite wide gaps between stitches. I guess it has just pulled a part in this area slightly, there is no pain, bleeding or signs of infection or anything abnormal from it so I will monitor and leave it alone for a while longer.

I’m in UK and had mine done by NHS. The surgeon at the time said that they’d use minimal stitching as the current thinking was that leaving the wound more ‘open’ was beneficial and helped it drain. My cut was roughly the same position as yours. I didn’t have any problems with sutures (except I think I have a piece of one buried just below the surface) and a very neat outcome that I’m more than happy with.

Really reassuring to know. UK also, so I’m guessing it’s a very similar cut / procedure we had done.

Done a lot of reading on here about salt baths etc, any experience with this? I’m more of the leave it be other than general showering for now.

TBH I didn’t bother with salt baths, too much of a palaver. As far as I remember, I took the dressing off after two days and showered at first until I was happy the wound had sealed OK (baths are less sterile than showers).

Looking back, I must have oozed a bit of blood as I remember running out of melolin low adherence dressings and had to visit the pharmacist to get some more, which was OK until the young lady who served me asked me what they were for to get the right size.

Looking back, maybe I shouldn’t have been so honest. Oh well, I don’t think she works there now.

I see this indentation on your glans. Was it always like this? I think it just needs time to heal. What method did the doctor use to circumcise you?

This was done free hand, low and tight. Believe it looks such a straight join due to the fact that the skin is swollen so has risen up over the wound.

The indentation seems to be from the swelling of the skin below, feels like it’s pushed the glands up a little causing a crease.

Interesting. My penis was circumcised as an infant and I always wondered why my glans looked like it was pushed forward in a strange way, so I feel better to see something similar. How did you choose low tight verses something like high and tight?

After 5 days mine is much more swollen

It's normal, you're complete okay, fine mate.

Does anyone have any knowledge on how I should care for the wound? At the moment the actual cut is slightly covered by skin and so not exposed to air. Will healing still take place? Do I risk shortening the skin by it healing and including the folds of skin?

I would see a doctor ASAP. A friend had separation of the shank skin and glans similar to yours and did nothing. He ended up with an unsightly scar where there should have been skin.
