Bio-Identical Estrogen Safety

ItsColdinMinnesota profile image

I miss my estrogen. I have osteopenia and I'm post menopausal. At the age of 64, is it safe for me to take bio-identical hormones for my bones? I have been without synthetic HRT for about two years and my bones are falling apart. Are there any studies on bio-identical HRT?

Hi there- I’m no expert but I think it should be safe to go on bio identical hormones and carry on for the rest of your life. If you can, go and see a menopause specialist - it’s been the game changer for me. Here in the U.K. GPs (normal doctors) are not at all well versed in HRT / menopause. Presume you’re in the states ? Good luck !

I have read a few. You have to search for them. The Japanese only use bioidentical hormones and they have a negligible risk of breast cancer. I am 60, had osteoporosis, went on HRT, tried bioidentical replacement which, for some reason did not agree with me. I am on synthetic HRT, along with vit D, K, Magnesium. I have gone from osteoporosis to osteopenia so far. My Dr. that prescribes my hrt says that the risk of breast cancer is very low and he wasn't concerned. I also had other troublesome symptoms, night sweats, etc. I found the studies a few years ago and don't have them currently. I did find a website by a RN who had osteoporosis herself, did a lot of research. She said from her research the calcium doctors say to take is counterproductive, (I was taking calcium but got kidney stones) and magnesium was much more beneficial. She went from osteoporosis back to normal over a few years. I was going to look for her site again, if I find it, I'll post it. Good luck!!

Interesting. My GP and OBGYN won't even consider synthetic HRT at my age (64). I think they are hypervigilant after the last big study on hormones and cancer. I have no other health conditions, but I now feel forced to pay out of pocket for bioidentical. My mother's osteoporosis killed her and I am more than willing to take a chance with hormones.

My insurance does not cover any type of hormone, bioidentical or otherwise. This is an older teaching when the study came out linking HRT to cancer. My GP pretty much attacked me over this and claimed I would get cancer! She wants me to take biophosphates! Look up what they do to you and can do to you! Our medical system has many flaws and has come away from being "scientific". I don't know your belief system, but I will tell you the doctors that are supporting my decisions are Christians.

Same here. My doctors prefer to prescribe biophosphates (saying the bad side effects are very rare) rather than hormones. Just read a study today that shows bone micro-fractures are now commonly found with biophosphate use. Different countries have different views about what is safe and effective. That big hormone study also has a zillion flaws. Given that the driving factor in U.S. healthcare is profit first, I always take that into consideration with everything I learn. It's so hard to know who to trust.

Yes it is! I saw an endocrinologist and he said he saw a man who got the jaw necrosis and it was really bad. He was not a fan of them, I was already on the fence about them and he pushed me over.. no biophosphates for me!

I do my own research, I read the medical papers. I've been hurt by medicine (severely injured by transvaginal mesh) and it really opened my eyes to the corrupt Pharmaceuticals, FDA and etc. We need a overhaul and a return to a push for morality - where money isn't the most important value. My own opinion.

Here is a video by Dr Newson explaining all you need to know about modern HRT - including the safety and the difference between bio-identical and body-identical hormones.
