My DD aged 8 had to have brain surgery last year and then contracted VM 3 weeks later. Poor little mite was so ill, it was horrendous.
Nearly a year on and is still under many consultants and 2 different hospitals for regular checks but I’m just wondering if anyone who’s had VM has suffered with over sensitive hearing, after ?
Loud noises or even the drop of cutlery onto a hard floor can be unbearable for her.
She’s due for a hearing test but I know she can hear well just not sure they’ll pick up on that she’s so sensitive to noise that a ‘normal’ person wouldn’t find a problem.
Can anyone relate ?

Since I had meningitis I have sensitive hearing, hypercusus, and especially can’t tolerate loud situations. I use noise restricting ear plugs. They don’t block out all sound they filter out the loudness and the background racket! I can still sit and hear everything said or sung eg in a show but without the loudness that bombards my brain. Can still hear someone speaking directly to me. I use Pluggz which I get from amazon. As I’ve got small ear canals I buy the kids ones that are for aeroplane trips but they work in all situations where the noise needs to be softened without completely blocking out sound. You may find that the hospital prescribe some, but they are reasonably priced and reusable (about £15 I think). Without them I also find if I am in a group of people or in a noisy situation I can’t filter out what one person is saying because it all hits my brain with a huge painful noise that I can’t filter anything out from. I don’t wear them all the time but always have them with me so if I suddenly find I need them I can put them in.
Hi. I too have real sensitivity to noises since I had bacterial meningitis and have been told I've got hyperacusis. You do learn to get better with it with time and more tolerant towards different noises, if this helps. I think the worst thing you can do is avoid noisy situations all together which is what I was doing at first. This makes unexpected noises hard unbearable. I use ear plugs if I know there's going to be loud music somewhere but try to slowly adapt and learn to tolerate noises again. Hope this helps. All the best.
Hi Donnyj01. Yes. I developed over sensitive hearing of certain frequencies from viral meningitis over 2 years ago. It kept me awake, and also woke me up. I experienced a sort of vibration in my chest and the low sound was found to be a frequency of 35 and / or 25 Hertz. That was figured out by a vibration monitoring engineer.
I then went to a 'quantum healer' here in New Plymouth, New Zealand and he couldn't stop the sound but he did stop my sensitivity to it. It no longer affects me or awakens me.
