Common illnesses after VM

Hi all, I had VM last July and had a fairly quick recovery and returned to work after two weeks. Before VM I had not had a day off sick.

Since VM I am constantly picking up colds, tonsillitis and any sick bugs which do the rounds.

Is this something which I just have to put up with or will it improve with time. How long after VM should my immune system be back to full health.

In the meantime is there anything I can do to boost it?

Thanks in advance x

Hi there im recovering from vm which i had in May this year. I still suffer from extreme tiredness and pick up colds easily. I suggest you go to a pharmacy and ask for a great multivitamin and for me they suggested molasses as well. All the very best to you ❤️

Hi,

I had vm in July 17 & had a fairly long recovery. I also seemed to pick up every bug & virus around for what felt like forever afterwards. Your immune system took a massive hit with the vm & used all its resources to fight that.

I’ve been a little better for the last 4/5months so keeping my fingers crossed I’m over it now. But second the advice for a multi vitamin. It’s worth a shot.

Hi - I had VM 3 weeks ago - hospitalised / lumber puncture etc after day 7 of headaches..

The week after was horrendous- although the majority of the pain was gone I still had a nagging little headache on one side of my head and behind right eye.

Also - I was having dizzy spells and my anxiety was through the roof.

I was signed off work for a further week- but after 2 weeks post hospital I returned to work.

Happy to report currently that the dizzy spells seemed to have settled however I have come down with bronchitis.

I can only imagine that VM suppresses your immune system for a short period. I know the flu can do this- despite your immune system firing up to combat the infection. I’m no doctor but maybe your immune system can’t sustain itself for a long period and needs to recover itself leaving you open to other infections ?

I am taking acyclovir that is an antiviral and that might help with u picking up viruses. There r also natural ones I understand. But I don’t know what they r.

I am almost 3 months post Mumps VM and interested to read this.

I take immunosuppresants for arthritis so have my white cells measured via blood tests. My neutrophils still remain low and I have to switch medication now.

The neutopaenia developed the week before admission but I was already feeling generally unwell at that point.

I assumed the reduced immunity was simply a contributory factor in getting Meninigits from Mumps. Interesting (but not suprising ) that you are all experiencing reduced immunity too.

Avoiding infection is the key where possible.
