My son is 19 is starting residential in Sept ember. I have been told he can stay on my claim until the day before his 20th birthday in January ( will receive child benefit an tax credits ). After this what will he be entitled to being a residential student? Of what I understand he will lose his PIP. Any advice appreciated.

I believe he will be entitled to employment support allowance and his disability allowance money or whatever they call it now PIP. My sons 29 this is what he gets as well.

If your son gets ESA that will continue but the daily living component of PIP will be lost for every day he is at college. If he comes home in the holidays you should claim it for those days. Any PIP mobility component is still payable to your son without any reduction for the time he is at college.

My son is at residential college. He gets UC. He also gets the mobility part of PIP. My son is on a 38 week placement so we claim the care component of pip when he’s at home.

However the rules for disabled students claiming UC have changed.

Residential colleges provide numerous benefits for students. They foster close-knit communities where students have increased access to faculty, resources, and extracurricular activities. This immersive environment promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and intellectual growth. Living on campus also enhances personal and social development, as students learn to navigate new friendships, responsibilities, and living arrangements.
